About Baby It’s Cold Outside Winter Hat by Marly Bird
As many of you know, I have my own yarn line with Red Heart, Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™. Of course, I seriously love this yarn and want to use it for as many projects as possible.
In my studio, I have an entire shelf FULL of this 100% washable merino yarn and it serves as my inspiration wall. Often, I will look at the shelf, mix and match colors and get a spark of inspiration for a design. Something like that happened just a couple weeks ago when I was searching for the perfect colors to make a winter hat for me!
Once I had the colors chosen I sat down and whipped up this super cute hat.
I used the basic single crochet ribbing for the cuff and a traditional V-st pattern for the body of the hat. Those are simple stitches combined to make a wonderful free crochet hat pattern that is easy, fun, and is a perfect beginner crochet pattern.

Notes
- The free double crochet hat pattern directions are for size written for multiple sizes with the smallest size outside the parentheses and the larger sizes within. I recommend finding the size you want to make then highlighting the numbers that pertain to that size throughout the pattern. 6-12 months (12-24 months, Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large)
- Cuff of hat is crocheted flat back and forth.
- Stitches are worked into the side of the completed cuff to work the body of the hat.
- The body of the hat is in rounds joined with a slip stitch.
- Just as an FYI…most adult hats are typically made in Adult Medium size. The Adult Large is REALLY LARGE and should only be made for people with a REALLY LARGE head.
- The sample was made in size medium.

Pattern
ETA: Here is a great free pattern review video with a very useful tip from my friend Ellen Gormley about this hat.
Body – Baby It’s Cold Outside Winter Hat
The body of the hat has a larger circumference than the cuff.
Circumference of Body | ||||||
Inches | 20 | 21 | 22.5 | 24 | 25 | 26.5 |
Centimeters | 50.8 | 50.8 | 57.15 | 60.96 | 63.5 | 67.31 |
This part of the hat is worked along the long edge of the cuff just completed. Work the first round of stitches evenly spaced around the cuff.
With color A
Set-up Round: Ch 1, working round the long edge of the cuff, sc 60 (64, 68, 72, 76, 80) sts.
sts evenly spaced around, join to the first sc with a slip stitch. Fasten off. Do Not Turn
With Color B
Round 1: Join yarn with a (standing dc (see special stitches), ch 1, dc) in same sc as slip stitch, skip 1 stitch, *V-st (see special stitches) in next stitch, skip 1 stitch; rep from * to end of round, slip stitch into dc at start of round. Fasten off — 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40) V-sts.
With Color C
Round 2: Join yarn with a (standing dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 space of first V-st of previous round, *V-st in next ch-1 space; rep from * to end of round, slip stitch into dc at start of round. Fasten off — 30 (32, 34, 36, 38, 40) V-sts.
Repeat round 2, 6 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10) times more, maintaining the established color sequence. (A, B, C, A, B, C, etc).
Designer Note: the final 6 rounds of decreases on this hat account for 2.5” [6.35 cm] of the height of the hat. If you wish to make your hat MORE slouchy, you can do so by adding more rounds than what is called for up to this point, but know that when you start the crown of the hat you will still have another 2.5” [6.35 cm] of height to the hat.
