Summer Lace Sweater Free Crochet Pattern

Several years ago I designed the Floral Motif Tee. This is a summer lace sweater crochet pattern. Love of Crochet published it in 2015. Then later I made the pattern available for free here on my site. Year after year, people come back to this crochet pattern. It’s a perfect summer make because it’s so lightweight. You can wear it over a tank top on the warmest of days. And yet, it’s the kind of piece that you could layer over short sleeve dresses and long sleeve tees as well. In other words, this summer lace sweater is a very versatile addition to your wardrobe.

Lots of Positive Ease for a Flattering Fit

I designed the summer lace sweater crochet pattern to have a lot of positive ease. In other words, this isn’t a tight-fitting top. It’s a loose, easy-drape top. The result is a flattering fit across a variety of figures. This also allows the top to fit over a variety of different types of clothing, truly making it the perfect layering piece. You can wear it over a swimsuit or you can wear it over a long-sleeved t-shirt.

While this is an oversized short-sleeved summer lace sweater, it’s not a long sweater. It’s not quite a crop top, but it isn’t tunic-length either. The length makes it so that the positive ease is oversized in only the best way, rather than swallowing you up like some large sweaters do.

Pretty Floral Squares

This crochet pattern uses pretty floral squares to create the lacework design. The design is openwork so it’s nice and breezy. The squares give it some graphic appeal. However, the floral features add an organic flair. This combination is another reason that this is a versatile crochet pattern. I designed this in a single color. However, you could make the motifs in different colors if you wanted a bolder design.

Use Lightweight Summer Yarns

You should use a size 1 or size 2 yarn weight to work this summer lace sweater. That lightweight yarn gives you great drape, a lacy feel, and it’s perfect to work with in the warm summer months. I’ve recommended a few yarn options in the pattern itself. For example, you might use It’s a Wrap yarn. Just make sure you check your gauge before you dive in to the pattern. After all, you never know how a yarn will behave compared to the one used to make the original design.
