Hat Construction – How to crochet the Mallow Mosaic Hat

The Mallow Crochet Mosaic Hat is constructed from the bottom up, starting with a slip stitch crochet band worked in rows and joined to form a ring. The striking mosaic pattern is then crocheted in rounds around the band, with the top of the hat decreased and gathered for a perfect fit. Add a pom-pom for a unique touch and extra flair.

The Mallow Crochet Mosaic Hat, a free pattern by Marly Bird, is crafted with WeCrochet Twill worsted weight yarn (100% superwash merino). But it would look great in Brava Worsted or even Brava Tweed.

A crochet project in progress using pink and purple yarns is shown alongside skeins of gray, light pink, purple, and dark gray. The pattern includes a geometric design perfect for a mosaic crochet hat. The workpiece is paired with a wooden crochet hook with blue and brown stripes. -Marly Bird

The Twill yarn comes in 16 different colors, mix and match any color to get the look you want for your own mosaic crochet hat.

  • Use markers in the first slip stitch of the brim on each row to help keep count.
  • Be cautious when working the slip stitches on the brim, maintain consistent tension or the stitches will begin to get too tight as the brim gets longer.
    • The slip stitches should NOT be any more snug than the size of the hook.
  • Brim of the hat is worked flat then seamed together.
  • Body of the hat is worked into the long side edge of the brim as instructed.
  • Body of the hat is worked in joined rounds. Use a marker to identify the first stitch of each round.
