Making a 3 Ball Knit Cowl
Great to wear throughout the day or as a layering accessory under your coat. You can’t go wrong with this pattern and the 24 color choices that are available with Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™. Chic Sheep is a 100% merino wool yarn, making it especially warm throughout the cold weather months.

Made in the round so that there is no seaming for this project makes it even easier and faster to complete. Because it is designed in the round you will need a stitch marker to know when you are at the beginning of each round. I love the knit row counter that we did a tutorial on the blog for. This is a great way to remind you to count each row as you work it. Learn more about this great row counter and how to use it in my tutorial.
When starting your cowl I suggest that you use the long tail cast on. This is my preferred method for most knit projects. It has great stability and a clean edge. If there is another method for casting on that you prefer please feel free to use it. Not sure how to start with a long tail cast on? Watch the video tutorial and check out my photo tutorial for starting the long tail cast on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I really make this cowl if I’m new to knitting?
Oh, absolutely! This Sunset Song Knit Cowl is perfect for beginners wanting to stretch their skills just a tiny bit. You’ll only need to know how to knit and purl, and I’ve got video tutorials for both styles… just in case!
What kind of yarn do I need for this cowl?
Honestly, I designed this specifically with Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™ in mind. It’s a 100% merino wool that’s super cozy and you only need two balls of it! Plus, it comes in 24 gorgeous colors, so you can really make it your own.
Is there a lot of sewing involved in this project?
Nope! That’s the best part… The pattern is worked in the round, which means no seaming at all. Faster and easier knitting? Yes, please!
What if I’m not sure when a new round starts?
Great question! Since it’s knit in the round, you’ll definitely want a stitch marker to keep track of the beginning of each round. I have a tutorial for a super cute DIY knit row counter that could help too… it’s a nice visual reminder!
I saw something about an errata… what’s up with that?
So here’s the thing… there was a little mix-up with the numbers in the written pattern when it first came out. The video tutorial is totally correct though! Yarnspirations knows and they’ll be releasing an updated pattern soon. So sorry for any confusion!
