What Does Blocking Sweaters Mean:
After finishing a knit or crochet project it is always recommended that you block. Blocking is the process of getting your stitches to reposition into the shape that you want. This is most noticeable with lace.
Blocking can be done with steam or water. With knit or crochet sweaters you will need to block your item each time you wash it. Don’t worry it isn’t as intense as it may sound.
For machine washable sweaters blocking consists of washing your sweater and then laying it flat to dry. When you lay it out you will shape it the way that you want it to dry.
If it is not a machine washable piece you will need to soak it in a water bath and then lay it flat to dry. If it is not a machine washable item you will NOT want to agitate the yarn or it may felt.
To block your items you don’t need to have a lot of fancy tools. You can work with a bucket of water and a towel. Although you don’t need tools to block they do make the process much easier.
Using the right washing agent is key. If your item can’t go in the washing machine you aren’t going to use soap. You will need a wool wash. To make sure that your piece is even on both sides it is helpful to have a grid to measure it on. A super absorbent towel is helpful it getting all of the extra water out of your item quickly. Drying racks are also key in helping your sweater to dry quickly.
It may seem like you need to find a lot of different items to block but really you just need one kit. The COCOKnit Sweater Care Kit has it all put together for you.
About the Kit:
Inside the Sweater Care Kit you will find everything that you need to make blocking your sweater a breeze. To start off it comes in a great bag that will hold all of your items together. Next time you need to block a sweater you can grab one thing and not have to look for all of your items.
To start off you will find a bottle of Eucalan wash. This is ideal when your items aren’t going into the washing machine. Once you have soaked your items you will want to get all of the excess water out. You never want to wring out your piece as it could distort the stitches or start the felting process.
COCO Knits has an amazing super-absorbent towel in the kit. Typically I go through two or three bath towels trying to get all of the extra water out of my project. I was able to use just the towel included in this kit (it did get very wet but I didn’t feel that I needed to get a second towel to get any more out).
When blocking my sweater I didn’t use the grid towel it would come in handy for some projects, like when you are blocking individual sweater pieces before sewing them together. The best part of this kit for me was the mesh pop-up dryer.
The mesh pop-up dryer was the perfect thing to add to this kit. It allowed me to pick any spot in my house to dry my sweater. Since you can clip it together to be domed it allows air to get under your sweater speeding up the drying time.
I highly recommend this kit to anyone who makes their own sweaters. This is a great gift idea and will make your sweater blocking so much easier and faster.
