Step into Crochet with Rohn Strong
Step into Crochet with Rohn Strong
Step into Crochet with Rohn Strong is a new book and we are just tickled he has returned to Yarn Thing with Marly
Bird to share it!
Rohn Strong is one of the most passionate crafters you’ll find. He’s an author, designer, instructor, and broadcast
personality in the knitting and crochet world. He specializes in crochet, tunisian crochet, hand knitting, and loom knitting.
Start crocheting socks on the right foot. Step into Crochet is the most comprehensive guide to creating crocheted socks. Author Rohn Strong shares 19 patterns for cozy socks, along with a wide variety of techniques, in this must-have reference and pattern book.
The first section of Step into Crochet focuses on construction methods: you’ll learn basic toe-up and cuff-down construction, while being introduced to a variety of heel and toe treatments. Plus, you’ll find out what makes a certain heel/toe combination perfect for socks!
The pattern section includes 19 socks ranging from basic ribbed and simple socks (great for customizing) to more technique-based pieces, focusing on colorwork, lace, cables, and motifs. Whether you’re ready to jump into crocheting socks feet first, or just dipping your toe in to try out a few fun patterns, Step into Crochet is your go-to resource. Keep up with this very busy guy through his website. www.RohnStrong.com, also through other media, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, plus his Ravelry Designer page and Group.
Rohn has visited the Yarn Thing podcast a few times, because we love him so, the first time was in 2013, again in 2014 , with his book New Methods in Crochet Socks 2015 and then about his Craftsy Class last year.
If you missed getting to hear this live, Marly’s Facebook page has video from her studio (her awesome laugh with Rohn’s voice!) https://www.blogtalkradio.com/yarnthing/2017/07/18/step-into-crochet-with-rohn-strong

Hi Ron and Marly, Thank you for this nice summer podcast on crochet socks!
This was a fun podcast for the summer Rohn and Marly!
P.S. Sorry if I said this twice! I’m not sure what I’m doing! Lol
I love ‘summer’ 🙂
Summer is a great time to get socks done to wear in winter.
Summer is a wonderful time to make gifts for Christmas.
Summer is a great time to crochet socks!
Hello Marly and Rohn! Listened to you from Arizona where our Summer monsoon rains have finally started.
Socks!!!! dying to try. Summer fun listening to you both today!
I know you all are melting in summer but down under its winter and I’m as done with winter as you are with summer! Great podcast. Good to know Ron’s book is a resource book, not just a pattern book. I’ve had my eye on it but I just may have to invest in a copy. =)
Thanks for this great episode. I love crochet, and appreciated hearing about Rohn’s observations and suggestions regarding the stretch of certain crochet stitches and use of particular yarns for success with crochet sock making, even in the summer! And Rohn, welcome back to the world of designing and all that entails! Do you still enjoy botanical illustration for fun?
Been seeing Rohn’s book all over my facebook feed and must say it’s so great to make the connection between him and his product. Hope to grab my copy this summer!
I would love to try out crochet socks this summer.
I am so very happy to hear about your crochet sock book released this summer! I have been knitting lately, but my first love is crochet. I also have very small feet, and when I wear many purchased socks, the heel extends out of my shoe. I would love to crochet socks that fit and are comfortable! Now, if I could just find great fitting shoes at a reasonable price. I guess you can’t have everything.
Socks are great summer projects, and Rohan’s new book sounds like an awesome resource!
Love summer and looking forward to crocheting socks.
Down under, dreaming of summer . Terrific interview. What a fascinating and fantastic sounding book!
Summer would be the an ideal time to learn to crochet socks!
I love listening to Ron. Summer is a great time for knitting and crocheting – more daylight hours!
This could be the summer of sock crocheting. I am a crochet first and a sock knitter second. This book could make crochet my only craft!
I understand about the heat in Summer because I’m in Texas, but I just keep on knitting and crocheting anyway.
Summer time, summer time, sum sum summer time…
How’s that for an ear worm to have while crocheting Rohn’s socks. 🙂 thanks for the interview.
Summer is a time for smaller projects. I would love to learn how to crochet these socks!
I love making socks and summer is a great time to do get them going so I have a full sock drawer for winter! And I totally agree about the quality of yarn: while I love my Patons Kroy and Red Heart as much as the next knitter/crocheted, there is something amazing about wearing Merino or MCN socks. One tip: try to get some that are 20-25% nylon so they are more durable.
In the summer I work on smaller projects since it’s so hot in North Carolina such as socks or dish cloths.
Socks are a great project for the summer.
Summer is the perfect time of year to knit and crochet socks!
I love crocheting socks in the SUMMER. Thank you Rohn Strong for writing books to help us understand the process of crocheting wearable crocheted socks.
Summer makes it hard to think about socks, but as a crocheter I’d love to give them a shot!
I love knitting socks in the summer as nothing heavy sits on my lap; I even take my sock projects to the beach. I think it is about time for me to try crocheting socks now!
I’ve never tried crocheted socks, but I learned so much just by listening! I think I’ll have to try making a pair before summer lets out.
I like to knit socks, but I’ve never tried to crochet them. This book would be a great way to begin. Because of their size and portability, socks are the perfect summer project!
Great show Marly and Rohn. Would love to win the book but if not I am definitely going to buy it so I can spend the rest of the summer crocheting socks!!’
I’ve never crocheted socks before, but I would love to learn about it this summer.
I started making socks for the first time this year and am trying to complete 12 by the end of the year so this truly has been a summer of socks for me.
I really enjoyed listening to this episode. I’ve never considered crocheting socks before but now I’m really inspired and would love to check out Rohn’s book this summer! Thank you so much!
Hi Ron and Marly. I loved your summer sock podcast. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I love to crochet on my patio in the summer! Thank you for your podcasts.
This was the year that I finally tried my hand at crocheting socks=)!! Two pairs down…(both with rather inappropriate yarns), but so fun anyway…and I love the look!! I’m so excited that there is a fabulous, new book out on the subject=) I always hear about knitters having their “vanilla sock patterns”…and I want to have my own perfect, go-to vanilla sock (crochet) pattern. I think Rohn Strong may be holding the key=)…Happy Summer!!
Summer is a great time to knit/crochet socks!
I just bought the book, great summer vacation reading. So excited, I always wanted to crochet socks.
I just listened to this podcast, and I loved hearing Rohn’s story! He inspired me by going all in!
Thanks for the wonderful summer idea for fall!
I can’t believe summer is over here if we follow the school calendar. The kids went back last week! That does mean more time for fiber though.
I’m late catching up on podcasts so I hope I haven’t missed this drawing. It’s summer, and I’ve been on vacation. The summer of love! No. Wait. That was 50 years ago. I mean the summer of socks!
I want to try making some of these socks this summer so I can have them ready for winter!
Summer is a great time to crochet cotton socks!
I start crocheting Christmas presents in the summer. 🙂
Summer sock making for cozy winter toesies!
I can’t believe that summer is over but fall is the perfect time to crochet socks!
I love wearing hand made socks. And they are a great small project for knitting/crocheting in the summer.
