FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: 40” wingspan (not including picot trim) x 18″ at (not including picot trim) center point.
GAUGE: 6.5 stitch pattern repeats x 6 row pattern repeats = 4″ [10 cm] CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge. Exact gauge is not critical to this project.

Ch– chain
Sc– single crochet
Dc– double crochet
Pm– place marker
Tch– turning chain
SPECIAL STITCHES
Small Filet Crochet Mesh: This most basic of mesh patterns. Small Mesh is built on a grid of chains and double crochet.
Stitch Multiple for gauge swatch: An odd number of sts, plus 3 for the foundation chain.
Set-up: dc in 6th ch from hook, ch1, skip 1ch, 1dc in next ch; rep from * to end, turn.
Row 1: Ch4 (counts as dc and ch-1), skip first dc and ch-1, dc in next dc, ch 1, skip ch-1; rep from * to last ch, dc in last ch, turn. Repeat row 1 for pattern.

Body
Ch 4.
Using the removable stitch marker to mark the CENTER stitch…we will keep this stitch marked throughout the rest of the pattern as it will be a reference point for the center increase.
Row 1 (RS): Skip 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc, (place marker in the dc just complete) ch 1, dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in last ch, turn – total of 7 (including original ch 3) dc, 4 ch-1 sps.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in same dc as ch-3 tch (this makes 2 dc in first st and is the increase at the start of the shawl), * ch 1, dc in next dc; repeat from * to center marked dc, (ch 1, dc) 3 times in center marked dc, move the marker up to the center dc of last 3 dc made, ** ch 1, dc in next dc; repeat from ** to last dc (this will be the tch of the previous row) ch 1, 2 dc in 3rd ch of tch of previous row, turn – 11 dc, 8 ch-1 sps.
Rep Row 2 only until center measurement of shawl is 18″. Remove marker. DO NOT CUT YARN.
Edging/Trim
Row 1 (WS): Ch 2 (does NOT count as a stitch). Dc3tog in the first 3 sts, *ch 3, dc3tog over next 3 sts; repeat from * to marked corner, placing last dc in the corner sts, ch 5, dc3tog over the same corner st and the next 2 sts, **ch 3, dc3tog over next 3 sts; repeat from ** to end of row.
Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, *skip dc3tog, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next ch-3 sp; repeat from * to ch-5 space, skip dc3tog, (3 sc, ch 3, 3 sc) in the ch 5 corner, **skip dc3tog, (2 sc, ch 3, 2 sc) in next ch-3 sp; repeat from ** to last ch-3 sp, slip stitch into first first dc3tog of previous row. DO NOT CUT YOUR YARN. Continue to join your cowl.
Finishing
Lay your finished piece out with the right side facing down. Overlap 6″ [15.24 cm] of the two ends keeping the end with the working loop on top of the other.
Round 1: Slip stitch through both fabrics at corner to join, ch 1, then sc evenly through both overlapping layers and around the edge of the shawl. slip stitch to first sc to join. Fasten off.
Weave in all ends.
