Miriam Felton

This week on The YarnThing Podcast: Miriam Felton

Miriam Felton started playing with fiber, yarn and thread as soon as she could hold a needle.  In 1999, she began knitting, having been taught the basic stitch(es) by her older sister.  Designing knitwear followed soon after.  While many of her designs focus on lace patterns, all of her work features textural details, and exploring positive and negative space with the use of knitted stitches to create lyrical and strikingly visual patterns.

Miriam has had designs published in Interweave Press magazines and books, the online magazines Knitty, and Twist Collective, the book Sensual Knits, as well as self publishing patterns via her website at miriamfelton.com.

Miriam has embarked on a 365 challenge to create something each day this year.  Be that cooking, baking, sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet and/or knitting!  If you follow her on twitter (link below), you can see her daily pictures of things that she has made each day this year.  Such a fun idea!  Have any of you done a year long project like this?

You can find Miriam on Facebook, Twitter, Ravelry, and her class on Craftsy.

I love making things from scratch, regardless of the medium. It could be knitting, cooking, stain glass, sewing, mosaic, etc. Making = happiness.

Making is just something that some folks Have to do. I feel like a life without creation is a very dull life. To learn how to create beautiful lace would add to the making of a full life.

Typically because we are fiber lovers “making” usually means using our hands and fiber to create something beautiful. Making in the larger sense can mean so many things. Think about the Italian chef who rolls Gnocchi by hand, or the ceramic artist who takes balls of mushed up clay and makes sculptures. No matter who the person, or what their hobby is, it is clear that the art of making brings joy.

Thanks for another great podcast! I love making crochet items but I have been branching out in my knitting abilities. I even made my first sweater for my brother, it was so satisfying when it was actually finished! Miriam’s class seems like a great way to expand my skills. Thanks for the chance to win and happy crafting!

My sister just sent me a great care package in the mail which included the perfect message on a little pin. It says, “Stop pinning. Start making.” I can get so sucked into finding the right inspiration that I leave myself no time to create. Hats off to you, Miriam, for all you are making and thanks, Marly, for a great show.
