Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2020

The Annual Game Day Mystery Make-Along with Marly Bird is back! Time to gear up for Sunday’s Big Game in our own way. Join knitters and crocheters from around the world as we work on a Mystery Make-Along project together throughout the day!

Over the last couple years we’ve had an AWESOME time doing a special make-along with you. We’ve learned quite a few things during the process of the event and we are using what we learned to make this year even better (is that possible?).

No matter what team you are rooting for, or if you aren’t rooting for any team at all, let’s have a great time and make some beautiful pieces!

Where are the patterns?

First of all, let me say that both patterns will remain FREE here on this website. You can get the free version (keep scrolling to the bottom of this post) or you can purchase an Ad FREE PDF of both patterns.

THE PATTERNS ARE NOW AVAILABLE AS AD-FREE PDF’S in the Marly Bird Ravelry Store. Click on the pattern image below for the one you want, add the pattern to your cart and purchase.

When is the Game Day Make-Along?

The game day make-along will take place on Sunday February 2, 2020. The first “play” will be released at 6am EST and the last “play” will be released at 6pm EST. Each hour there will be a new “play” released.

Yes, this is a longer amount of time than before. One of the things we noticed in previous years is that we often need just a bit more time (especially knitters) to complete the instructions. So, with that in mind we’ve extended the time for the game day make-along.

Just like the past two years, all “plays” will be linked below. Click the link for the hour you wish to follow and you will be directed to the “play” for that hour. Yes, each hours play is posted on its own page. Be sure to come back every hour to see the new clue.

I made a video to help explain:

What are we making?

This is a Mystery Make-Along, so we can’t tell you too much just yet. What we can tell you is that it is a wearable.

This year the two items are very different.

Knitters will be making an accessory with a variety of stitches and techniques. This piece is designed by Marly Bird.

Crocheters will be making a different accessory than the knitters and it too will be a variety of stitches and techniques. Guest designer, Robyn Chachula, has designed the crochet version. There are two sizes to choose from, S-XL [2xl-3xl].

Please note, there is a knit version and a crochet version, so be sure you are reading the correct play each time!

What materials do I need?

Yarn Color for Both

Marly and Robyn have worked some colorwork into the pieces along with the pattern stitches. To ensure that the colorwork shows up it is important that you choose colors that are not too close in shade. Best to choose light and dark colors.

Also, we recommend that you do not choose a variegated yarn

The samples were worked up in 5 colors but could also be worked up in two colors.

For the Game Day Mystery Make-Along 2020 project, you will need the following:

Game Day Mystery Make-Along with Marly Bird Crochet Version

Crochet Mystery Make-Along Supplies

Yarn

Red Heart Yarns, Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™ (this is my #1 choice for this project). Sample used 5 colors of Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™ yarn

  • Linen – 1 ball all sizes
  • Creme de mint – 1 ball [S-XL]; 2 balls [2xl-3xl]
  • Suite – 1 ball all sizes
  • Poolside – 1 ball all sizes
  • VIP – 2 balls all sizes

Added Note about crochet version with 2 colors: If you do it with 2 colors you need 5 balls of the main color and 1 ball of the contrasting color if you are using Chic Sheep. That amount works for both sizes.

Other Yarns That Would Work

Robyn suggests that you choose colors in the same family or choose colors that blend well together.

Red Heart Yarn, Super Saver (RHSS) : many colors to choose from here.

Bernat, Super Value: many colors to choose from here.

Red Heart Yarn, Super Saver Ombre: if you want to go with just two colors, choosing ombre as the main color and a solid color of RHSS for the contrast would work.

Robyn also suggests that you could use stash yarn for this project as long as it is all the same weight, same fiber content, and the colors all blend well together. She worked hard to make it as accessible as possible for everybody.

Other Supplies

  • Size H [5mm], I [5.5mm], J [6mm] crochet hooks (or size to obtain gauge…gauge is given at start of event)
  • Stitch Markers, removable
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
