Adult Without Hair (Adult With Hair)

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Adult Without Hair— Brim to top of hat = 10” [25.4 cm]; Circumference = 20” [50.8 cm] around brim, 22” [55.88 cm] around body. 

Adult With Hair— Brim to top of hat = 10” [25.4 cm]; Circumference = 22” [55.88 cm] around brim, 24” [60.96 cm] around body. 

GAUGE

1 wing stitch set = 2.2” with larger hook.

SKILL LEVEL: Adventurous Beginner 

This is a beginner-friendly crochet hat pattern especially for the adventurous beginner who wants to broaden their crochet skills just a little bit.

WINGS OF HOPE CROCHET HAT MATERIALS REQUIRED

Yarn

Worsted Weight Yarn

**A non-itchy yarn is recommended if making this hat for somebody without hair or going through Chemo. It’s always important to use soft yarn when making crochet or knit chemo caps.

Sample used: Caron Cakes; 17016 Bumbleberry, 1 ball [80% acrylic & 20% wool].

G/7 (4mm), H/8 (5 mm)

The brim for this crochet cancer hat is made in rows – worked back and forth flat.

Use stitch markers to evenly section out the brim before working the set-up row 1. 

The body of the Wings of Hope crochet hat pattern is made in the round, working along the side edge of the brim.

The stitch pattern repeat in the round is 10.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Double Crochet 2 Together (dc2tog): Yarn over hook, insert hook into next stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook); yarn over hook, insert hook into next stitch indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. 

Back Post Single Crochet (Bpsc): Insert hook from back to front to back around the post of designated stitch, and yarn over, pull loop from back to front to back (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through two loops.

Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog): Insert hook into next space indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook into next space indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

With smaller hook

Chain 12.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn — 11 sc.

Row 2: Sc in the back loop only of each sc across, ch 1, turn. 

Repeat row 2, 88 (98) more times.– [45 (50) ridges].

Wings of Hope Hat Body

With larger hook

Turn to begin working on long edge of brim (around the row ends), ch 1.

Set-up round 1: Evenly place 100 (110) sc along long side of brim, join with a slip stitch to first sc (begin working  in the round), ch 1, do not turn.

Set-up round 2: Bpsc around, join to first sc of round as follows: remove loop from hook, insert hook from back to front through the first sc of round, place loop on hook and pull through the sc and stitch on hook, ch 1. 

Foundation round 1: Sc in the first st, *ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st; repeat from the * to last stitch, ch 1, skip next st, join with a slip stitch in first sc, ch 1. 

Foundation round 2: Sc in the first st, *ch 1, skip the next ch-1, sc in the next st; repeat from the * to last stitch, ch 1, skip next ch-1, join with a slip stitch in first sc, ch 1. 

Foundation round 3: Sc in the first sc, *ch 5, [skip the next ch-1 sp, skip the next sc] twice, working in front of the next ch-1 sp, slip st in the next ch-1 sp 2 rows below, ch 5, [skip the next sc, skip the next ch-1 sp] twice, sc in the next sc; repeat from the * to last  4 sc, ch 5, [skip the next ch-1 sp, skip the next sc] twice, working in front of the next ch-1 sp, slip st in the next ch-1 sp 2 rows below, ch 5, [skip the next sc, skip the next ch-1 sp] twice, join with a slip stitch in first sc, ch 1.

Round 6: Sc2tog around. 

Finishing the Wings of Hope Hat

Fasten off.

Cut yarn leaving a 10” [25.4 cm] tail. 

Use the tail to sew the top of hat closed. 

Sew the brim closed. 

Weave in tails.

Wash and block hat to final measurement.

Add pom pom (optional)
