Well, we’ve made it to Week 4 part 2 Crochet Tournament of Stitches Mystery Make-Along 2019. Before we get started, I want you to PROMISE that you will be patient with yourselves and with me. This is a challenging section NOT because the stitches are hard but BECAUSE it is different than what most of you have done before.
Also, many of you have different measurements than what I have and that is okay (I think the difference between sections 7 and 8 are my fault but I address that below) . We will figure out how you can adjust the pattern to fit your shawl. BUT you must first understand the basic construction of the triangles.
Please, trust me. We will get through this
And at the same time I am sure I will get a few of you that will just do a couple rounds of plain border and call it good. That would be okay too 😉
Let’s not waste any time and just jump right in.
BORDER
Special Stitches and Abbreviations
Single crochet 2 together (sc2tog): [Insert hook in next or indicated st and pull up a lp] twice, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook.
Surface slip stitch (surface sl st): Insert hook in indicated sp, yo, pull lp to RS and through lp on hook.
First Side Edging
With Border color and RS of shawl facing, and working along the long edge of the shawl, join yarn with a slip stitch in corner of section 1.
Rnd 1 (RS): Working in ends of rows, ch 1, place marker, evenly space 30 sc in each section across the long edge — 270 sc.
Rotate piece to width edge of section 9, ch 1, sc in each hdc across edge — 13 sc.
Rotate piece to jagged side edge of section 9, ch 1, working in ends of rows, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section, place a marker in last stitch — 30 sc.
Rotate piece to width edge of section 8, ch 1, sc evenly spaced 16 sc across section (make sure the fabric isn’t puckering) — 16 sc.
Rotate piece to jagged side edge of section 8, ch 1, working in ends of rows, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section, place a marker in last stitch — 30 sc.
Note: After seeing so many of your samples coming out with this section larger than I had planned, I had a look at my instructions. After calculating everything again, I think I had you leave too many stitches unworked on section 7 when I gave you the instructions for section 8. So, we have a bigger gap to fill if you followed what I had written. That is why these numbers are larger.
At the risk of giving you too much information, I feel the need to tell you that if you do not need all 30 of the stitches for the width edge of section 7 and the established pattern of 16 is enough for your shawl, then do 16 instead of the 30.
Rotate piece to width edge of section 7, ch 1, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section — 30 sc.
Rotate piece to jagged side edge of section 7, ch 1, working in ends of rows, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section, place a marker in last stitch — 30 sc.
Rotate piece to width edge of section 6, ch 1, sc evenly spaced 16 sc across section — 16 sc.
Rotate piece to jagged side edge of section 6, ch 1, working in ends of rows, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section, place a marker in last stitch — 30 sc.
Rotate piece to width edge of section 5, ch 1, sc evenly spaced 16 sc across section, place a marker in the last stitch of this row (this will be the starting point for triangles 5-8) — 16 sc.
Rotate piece to jagged side edge of section 5, ch 1, working in ends of rows, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section, place a marker in last stitch — 30 sc.
Rotate piece to opposite width edge of section 5, ch 1, place a marker in the first stitch of this row (this will be the starting point for triangles 1-4), sc evenly spaced 16 sc across section — 16 sc.
Rotate piece to jagged side edge of section 4, ch 1, working in ends of rows, place a marker in first stitch, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section, — 30 sc.
Rotate piece to width edge of section 4, ch 1, sc evenly spaced 16 sc across section — 16 sc.
Rotate piece to jagged side edge of section 3, ch 1, working in ends of rows, place a marker in first stitch, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section, — 30 sc.
Rotate piece to width edge of section 3, ch 1, sc evenly spaced 16 sc across section — 16 sc.
Rotate piece to jagged side edge of section 2, ch 1, working in ends of rows, place a marker in first stitch, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section, — 30 sc.
Rotate piece to width edge of section 2, ch 1, sc evenly spaced 16 sc across section — 16 sc.
Rotate piece to jagged side edge of section 1, ch 1, working in ends of rows, place a marker in first stitch, sc evenly spaced 30 sc across section, — 30 sc.
Rotate piece to width edge of section 1, ch 1, sc in each hdc across edge — 13 sc.
Ch 1, join with a slip stitch to first sc of rnd. Fasten off.
The long straight edge of the shawl has 270 sc. Each jagged edge of each section now has 16 sc along the width edge and 30 sc along the height edge (or long edge or row edge…whichever way best describes the edge) with the exception of the width on section 7 which has more to fill a bigger gap.

6th Triangles
Repeat rows 1-30.
7th Triangles
Well, as you noticed this triangle has much more area to fill. As I mentioned above when you did the first eeging, I think I goofed on when I gave you the instructions for section 8. It wasn’t wide enough and left too many stitch unworked from section 7. Not a problem, we just have a bigger gap to fill. For this section we will decrease on every row.
⭐️If you did the 30 stitches across the width of section 7 then follow the next 30 rows.
⭐️If you did the 16 stitches across the width of section 7 then repeat rows 1-30 as before and disregard the instructions below.
With WS of shawl facing, the first added marker of Section 5, join border color in the marked stitch with a slip stitch.
Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 27, sc2tog in last sc and first sc of side edge (this stitch is marked with a marker to help you find it, you can remove the marker after you work into the stitch), sl st in next sc of side edge, turn — 29 sc.

Row 30 (decrease row): Skip sl st, sc2tog, turn — 1 sc.
Join with a slip stitch to next ch-1 space.
8th Triangles
Repeat rows 1-30 (same 1-30 as triangles 5 and 6), ending at the ch-1 space on section 9. Do Not Turn or Fasten Off.
Second Side Edging
Ch 1, working along the outside edge of entire piece, evenly sc around, working 3 sc in the outside corners of section 1 and 9, and the two corners of section 5, join in first sc. Fasten off.
Optional
Slip Stitch Embroidery Trim
Row 1: With RS facing and holding any color other than border color on underside, insert hook in corner of section 9 (in the same spot you joined with a slip stitch on the last round) yarn over hook and pull up a loop, work surface sl sts (see Special Stitches) evenly sp across edges of triangles 1-4, across the bottom edge of section 5 and across edges of triangles 5-8.
Fasten off.
Row 2: With RS facing and working on inner edge of row 1, work another set of surface sl sts parallel to row 1. Fasten off.
Weave in Ends!
If your shawl measurements are not the same as mine here is what you need to do.
First, figure out how many sc’s you get in 1 inch. You can measure a row of sc from one of the sections to figure this out.
For example: 3.33 sc stitches = 1 inch and 3.33 sc rows = 1 inch.
Second, figure out the length and width measurement of each section at the jagged edge. We care most about the jagged edge because this is where we are filling in stitches.
For example: 9” x 5”
Third, calculate the number of stitches for those measurements
For example: 9” * 3.33 sc per inch = 29.97. Round up to even number. 30 sc. 5” * 3.33 sc per inch = 16.65. Round to an even number. 16 sc.
In this example, I need to make sure that when I do my first edging that I place 16 sc along the width edge of this particular section, and 30 sc along the length edge.
Now, go and complete first edging instruction but substitute these calculations for each section. Be sure to add the markers, they will really help you.
To make the triangles, you need to figure out how often you need to decrease do go from the # of stitches wide to 1 stitch, over the # of rows long (the stitches you did along the length edge).
For example: We have 30 rows to use and 16 stitches. 30/16= 1.87 rows. You can decrease a fraction of a row so we will round that to the nearest number. 2. So in this example, we would decrease 1 stitch every 2 rows over a total of 30 rows until we are left with 1 stitch.
Once you have that calculation figured out for each triangle, go ahead and make the triangle. You will use the same technique as written in the pattern but you will work the decrease rows according to YOUR calculations.
SideNote from Marly: When I am doing shaping of any kind, I find it helpful to list all the rows you have then chart out the decrease rows and how many stitches I will have after each decrease row. Being such a visual learner makes this the best way for me to “see” the actual math.
These images helped me so I want to share them. They are basically a drawing of what I just wrote out above. Use them if you find them helpful, disregard them if you find them pointless.
