Tournament of Stitches Mystery Make-Along:

If you don’t know what the Tournament of Stitches Mystery Make-Along (TOS) is all about, head over to the blog post and learn all the details before getting started.

This weeks pattern stitches are supposed to be a bit more difficult than last weeks but not as difficult as next weeks. Take your time as you work these sections and remember, each section should extend out on the same side as the last. When looking at the RS of the shawl, if you are right handed, it will be the left side; if you are left handed, it will be the right side.

Now that week 1 is complete, I want to share a picture of what the body should look like thus far. Hopefully your mystery make-along shawl is looking similar and you’re excited about this weeks instructions.

Note: if you are left handed, your sections will stair step on the opposite side of mine.

Color Sequence:

The beauty of this pattern is that you get to select which colors you want to use in each section, and each section is bigger than the last so you will use MORE yarn the larger the section number.

Continue in the pattern following the color sequence you already established. If you find you want to change it up, you can totally do that! If you find you want to use only one color or more than 2 colors in a section, totally up to you. Just remember to anticipate the amount of yarn you will need.

Special Stitches/Abbreviations:

⭐️Back Post (BP): prep the hook for the stitch you want to make, (example, yarn over 1 time for dc, or 2 times for tr, or 3 times for dtr, or 4 times for trtr) insert hook from the back around the stem of the stitch in the row below from right to left, then complete st in the usual way.

⭐️Beginning sc3tog: insert hook in same ch/st as previous sc, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook in next ch/st, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice (4 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 4 loops.

⭐️Double Treble Crochet (dtr): Yarn over hook three times, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop on to your hook. (5 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loop on your hook] four times.

⭐️Foundations single crochets: insert hook in st/sp indicated, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 1 loop (this becomes the “ch”), yarn over, draw through 2 loops (this becomes the “sc”), *insert hook under 2 loops of the “ch” st of stitch just created, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 1 loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops; rep from * for total number of foundation chains needed.

⭐️Trinity sc3tog: insert hook in same ch/st as 3rd leg of previous sc3tog, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook in next ch/st, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice (4 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 4 loops.

Pattern

Section 4– Raised Wave

Notes for Section 4: Use two colors in this section and change colors every 2 rows. I chose to cut the yarn at each color change. I found that carrying it up the side was unsightly. Even with the border covering that edge I don’t think it is a good idea to carry up the yarn along the side.

⭐️If you are looking at the RS of the shawl, these chains will extended from the left side of the fabric if you’re right handed, on the right side of the fabric if you’re left handed.⭐️

Foundation Row: With RS facing, join next color of sequence with a slip stitch into the first stitch, 54 sc in each ch and stitch across the row, then work 17 foundation single crochets, turn— 71 sc’s.

Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc, *hdc, dc, tr, dtr, trtr, dtr, tr, dc, hdc, sc*; repeat from * to * across, turn — 71 sts.

Row 2 (RS): Ch 4 (counts as dtr), skip sc, *BPdtr, BPtr, BPdc, BPhdc, BPsc, BPhdc, BPdc, BPtr, BPdtr, BPtrtr*; repeat from * to * ending with dtr in sc, turn.

Change colors in the last stitch of the row in the last pull through. Here is a video if you need help https://youtu.be/klBMm9gCqig

Row 3 (WS): Ch 1, sc in dtr, *hdc, dc, tr, dtr,
trtr, dtr, tr, dc, hdc, sc*; repeat from * to * ending with sc in 4th ch of tch, turn.

Row 4 (RS): Ch 4 (counts as dtr), skip sc, *BPdtr, BPtr, BPdc, BPhdc, BPsc, BPhdc, BPdc, BPtr, BPdtr, BPtrtr*; repeat from * to * ending with dtr in sc, turn.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 (changing colors every 2 rows) EIGHT times more changing colors every 2 rows. On last repeat of row 4, do not fasten off.

Marly Note ETA: if you find that doing 8 repeats more makes this section more than the 9″ you can absolutely stop with fewer repeats. Just make sure you end on a row 4, and do the final row below. It is more important that you are close to 9″ than having all the repeats in this section.

With the same color as the last repeat you did.

Final row (WS): Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn —71 sc’s.

Fasten off.

Take the time to WEAVE IN ALL YOUR ENDS AT THIS TIME! Trust me, do it now.

Section 5– Trinity Stitch

⭐️If you are looking at the RS of the shawl, these chains will extended from the left side of the fabric if you’re right handed, on the right side of the fabric if you’re left handed.⭐️

Foundation Row: With RS facing, join next color of sequence with a slip stitch into the first stitch, sc in each stitch across the row (71 sc), then work 16 foundation single crochets, turn — 87 sc’s.

Row 1 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first stitch, beginning sc3tog (see special stitches), *ch1, trinity sc3tog (see special stitches); rep from * to last sc, sc in same ch as 3rd leg of previous sc3tog, turn — 43 sc3tog’s and 2 sc’s.

Row 2: Ch1, sc in first stitch, beginning sc3tog, *ch1, trinity sc3tog; rep from * to end working 3rd leg of last sc3tog in last sc, sc in same stitch, turn.

Repeat rows 2 until section measures 9”.
