Week One Shawl Instructions????????
Materials
Suggested Yarn: Red Heart Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™, 100% washable merino yarn, 186 yds, 3.5 oz. Marly’s sample colors are listed below:
- Velvet (3 balls) MAIN COLOR
- Vineyard (2 balls)
- Regal (2 balls)
- Polo (2 balls)
- Green Tea (1 ball)
Hooks: I/9 (5.5mm), J/10 (6mm) size needed to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle
Measurements (before blocking)
Section 1: 4.25” wide x 9” tall
Section 2: 7.5” wide x 9” tall
Section 3: 13″ wide x 9″ tall
Section 4: 18” wide x 9” tall

Color Sequence:
The beauty of this pattern is that you get to select which colors you want to use in each section, and each section is bigger than the last so you will use MORE yarn the larger the section number.
Look at the diagram and notice that I’ve listed how many colors you will use in each section.
I’ve also listed where I am using the main color in my shawl (remember, I am using a total of 5 colors) since you don’t know what the shawl looks like yet.
This now becomes your color sequence. Fill in your color sections below.

eta: You can assign any color combo you want, you don’t have to stick to my 5 color sequence. I did want you to know when each section will require more than one color. ???????? More than anything I want you to be able to plan for 1: where you want your colors, 2: make sure you have enough of the colors you want for the later sections where there is more yarn used, and 3: make sure you know what your border color will be (this should be your main color).
Special Stitches/Abbreviations:
⭐️Double Treble Crochet (dtr): Yarn over hook three times, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop on to your hook. (5 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loop on your hook] four times.
⭐️Single Crochet Spike Stitch (sc spike): Insert hook in the indicated st 2 rows below, yarn over and pull up a loop to current height, yarn over, draw through both loops.
⭐️Stacked Double Crochet (Stacked Dc): (Do not ch 1 prior to making the first sc) Sc in first stitch/space, insert hook in between two legs of the base, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook.

⭐️Standing Double Crochet: Place slip knot on your hook, yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop on to your hook. (3 loops on your hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on your hook] twice.
⭐️Standing Half Double Crochet: Place slip knot on your hook, yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop on to your hook. (3 loops on your hook), yarn over and draw through all loops on your hook.
⭐️Treble Crochet (tr): Yarn over hook twice, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop on to your hook. (4 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on your hook] three times.
⭐️V-st: (Dc, ch 1, dc) in stitch or space indicated.
Pattern
Section 1– V-Stitch
Chain 15
Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd chain from hook (skipped 2 chains do not count as a stitch) and in each chain to end, turn — 13 sts.
Row 2 (WS): 1 Stacked dc (see special stitches), *skip 1 hdc, V-st (see special stitches) in next hdc; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, skip 1 hdc, dc in last hdc, turn — 5 V-sts.
Row 3 (RS): 1 Stacked dc, * V-st in next ch-1 space; repeat from * to last ch-1 space, dc in last stitch, turn — 5 V-sts.
Rows 4-16: Repeat row 3
Row 17: Ch 2, hdc in first dc, *hdc in next dc, hdc in next ch-1 sp, skip 1 dc; repeat from * to last ch-1 space, hdc in next dc, hdc in last dc, change to next color in sequence in last stitch of row 17, do not turn. — 13 hdc’s.

Section 2– Cross Stitch Herringbone
You should have the first color for this section already on your hook. As you continue on in this section be sure to change to the other color you chose every row.
With the RS still facing you, continue with the loop on your hook and chain 15, turn.
ETA: If you are looking at the RS of the shawl, these chains will extended from the left side of the fabric if you’re right handed, on the right side of the fabric if you’re left handed.
Row 1 (WS): Hdc in 3rd chain from hook (skipped 2 chains do not count as a stitch) and in each chain to end then across hdc’s from row 17 of last section. Turn. Fasten off — 26 hdc’s.
Change color
Row 2 (RS): Standing dc (see special stitches), *skip 1 hdc, dc in next 3 hdc, working in front of the dc’s just made tr into the skipped stitch; repeat from * 5 times more, dc in last stitch. Turn. Fasten off — 6 tr’s.
Change color
Row 3 (WS): Standing hdc (see special stitches), hdc in each stitch to end. Turn. Fasten off –26 hdc’s.
Change color
Row 4 (RS): Repeat row 2.
Change color
Row 5 (WS): Repeat row 3.
Change color
Row 6 (RS): Standing dc (see special stitches), *skip 3 hdc, tr in next hdc, working in back of the tr just made dc into the 1st skipped stitch, dc in 2nd skipped stitch, dc in 3rd skipped stitch; repeat from * 5 times more, dc in last stitch. Turn. Fasten off — 6 tr’s.
Change color
Row 7 (WS): Standing hdc (see special stitches), hdc in each stitch to end. Turn. Fasten off –26 hdc’s.

Row 8 (RS): Repeat row 6
Change color
Row 9 (WS): Repeat row 7.
Change color
Rows 10-17: Repeat rows 2-9.
Rows 18-21: Repeat rows 2-5.
Take the time to WEAVE IN ALL YOUR ENDS AT THIS TIME! Trust me, do it now.
Section 3– Colonnade
It is important to note that the traditional wrong side of the double crochets will be on the right side of the shawl.
With RS facing, join next color of sequence with a slip stitch into the last stitch (on the left edge if you’re right handed, on the right edge if you’re left handed).
Chain 19, turn.
ETA: If you are looking at the RS of the shawl, these chains will extended from the left side of the fabric if you’re right handed, on the right side of the fabric if you’re left handed.
Foundation Row (WS): Hdc in 3rd chain from hook (skipped 2 chains do not count as a stitch) and in each chain to end then across hdc’s from row 21 of last section, turn — 43 hdc’s.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first hdc, ch 1, sk 1 hdc, * sc in next hdc, ch 4, sk 2 hdc, sc in next hdc, ch 3, sk 3 hdc; rep from * across to last 6 hdc, sc in next hdc, ch 4, sk 2 hdc, sc in next hdc, ch 1, sk 1 hdc, sc in last hdc, turn — 6 ch-4 sps.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, sc in 1st sc, *9 dc in ch-4 sp, sc spike over ch-3 sp to center st of skipped 3-ch on row 1; rep from * across to last ch-4 sp, 9 dc in last ch-4 sp, sc in last sc, turn.
Row 3 (RS): Ch 6 (counts as dtr, ch-1 sp), sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, sk 3 dc, *sc in next dc, ch 4, sk 4 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, sk 3 dc; rep from * across to last 3 dc, sc in next dc, ch 1, dtr in last sc, turn.
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in ch-1 sp, *sc spike over ch-3 sp in center dc, 9 dc in ch-4 sp; rep from * across to last ch-3 sp, sc spike over ch-3 sp in center dc, 5 dc in ch-6 sp, turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 1, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, *ch 4, sk 4 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, sk 3 dc, sc in next dc; rep from * across to last 7 dc, ch 4, sk 4 dc, sc in next dc, ch 1, sc in top of t-ch, turn.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc in sc, *9 dc in ch-4 sp, sc spike over ch-3 sp in center dc; rep from * across to last ch-3 sp, 9 dc in last ch-4 sp, sc in last sc, turn.
Rep rows 3–6 three times more, then row 3 once. Fasten off.
