SPECIAL STITCHES 

Foundation Double Crochet (fdc): 

First fdc: Ch 3 (counts as dc), yarn over, insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (forming a chain), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice (forming the double crochet)

Next fdc: Yarn over, insert hook into base of previous stitch (in the “chain” space), yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop on hook (forming a chain), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice (forming the next double crochet).  Repeat directions for desired amount of sts.

Stacked Double Crochet (Stacked Dc): (Do not ch 1 prior to making the first sc) Sc in first stitch, insert hook in between two legs of the base, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook.

NOTES

  • Play 4 is joined at the upper corner of Play 2. Before joining foundation rotate cowl so the last row of Play 1 and 3 aligned with the foundation of Play 4. See video for more details.
  • Play 4 is joined to Play 2 at the end of each RS row.  The slip stitches that begin each WS count as turning chains and not stitches.

SMOOTH JAZZ COWL PLAY 4 PATTERN

Row 1: (RS) 57 fdc, sl st to 3rd st on edge of Play 2, do not turn.  (note: bottom edge will be joined during Play 5, but if you don’t want to wait, you can seam the foundation to the corner of Play 2 now.)

Row 2: Sl st to next 2 sts on edge of Play 2, turn, dc in first dc, *skip 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch 2, skip back 2 dc, dc in same dc as previous sc; repeat from * across to last 2 sts, dc in last 2 sts, turn. 

Row 3: Stacked dc in first dc, dc in next dc, 3 dc in each ch-2 sp across, dc in last dc, skip next st on Play 2, sl st to next st on Play 2, do not turn.

Rows 4-17: Repeat Rows 2-3 7 times

Row 18: Sl st to next 2 sts on edge of Play 2, turn, dc in each dc across, turn. – 57 dc.

Cowl continues below, but you have an option now to stay with this version, or switch to another version.  Just pick 1 for Rows 19-35.

Row 19: Stacked dc in first dc, dc in each dc across, skip next st on Play 2, sl st to next st on Play 2, do not turn.

Rows 20-35: Repeat Rows 2-3 8 times

Weave in ends. 

(Optional) Pin to schematic size, spray with water and allow to dry.
