Super Simple Shawl

The Free Crochet Pattern Super Simple Shawl uses a crochet crowd favorite small filet crochet mesh stitch combined with easy picot border. Made with the amazingly soft and ultra colorful Colorscapes yarn by Red Heart Yarns (see link below), this shawl is sure to become a favorite accessory either draped around the shoulders or around the neck like a shawlkerchief (my preferable way of wearing it ;-))

There are times when I like to just let a yarn speak to me. I let it tell me what it wants to be; that is exactly what happened with this design. I had ONE ball of the new Colorscapes yarn by Red Heart yarn and I knew I wanted to have something I could wear to my sons football game (their team colors are purple and gray). So, I chained enough to start a shawl that I could turn into a cowl.
What is that I said, a shawl that could be turned into a cowl? What does that look like? Well, let me show you! Better yet, I will tell you how you can make your own. It is super simple and you can make one in no time (this took me about 4 hours to make). Are you ready to make your own Super Simple Shawl?

Pattern

Body
Ch 4.
Using the removable stitch marker to mark the CENTER stitch…we will keep this stitch marked throughout the rest of the pattern as it will be a reference point for the center increase.
Row 1 (RS): Skip 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc, (place marker in the dc just complete) ch 1, dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in last ch, turn – total of 7 (including original ch 3) dc, 4 ch-1 sps.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in same dc as ch-3 tch (this makes 2 dc in first st and is the increase at the start of the shawl), * ch 1, dc in next dc; repeat from * to center marked dc, ([ch 1, dc] 3 times) in center marked dc, move the marker up to the center dc of last 3 dc made, ** ch 1, dc in next dc; repeat from ** to last dc (this will be the tch of the previous row) ch 1, 2 dc in 3rd ch of tch of previous row, turn – 11 dc, 8 ch-1 sps.
Rep Row 2 only until center measurement of shawl is 18″. Remove marker.
Edging/Trim
Row 1: Picot (see special stitches) into each dc to end.
Fasten off.
Buttons
The small filet mesh acts as a button hole to the shawl to turn it into a shawlkerchief. All you need to do is choose two decorative buttons that will fit through the mesh and match the shawl.
With right side facing, sew the buttons in place to the wingspan edge on the right or left half of the shawl (your choice). I placed one button directly on the edge/corner, then I measured 6″ in from that spot and placed the other button.

Adjust the distance between the buttons for your desired look as the shawl sits around your neck. You can make the buttons closer together for a more draped cowl look or farther apart for a more fitted look. Either way looks GREAT!
