About When We Were Young Crochet Hat by Marly Bird
For those of you who don’t know, the Griddle Stitch (which also goes by a bunch of other names such as lemon peel stitch) is one of my favorite stitches. It’s an easy stitch pattern. And yet, the resulting texture is great. That’s why I decided to use to make this hat. I also used single crochet ribbing. Learn more about the hat on the blog.
I also used griddle stitch pattern on my Crochet Thrummed Mittens patterns and my Cuddles Baby Blanket pattern.
Once I decided on the griddle stitch I worked on a design with a crown that has a fun shape. I made sure to pair up the decreases in a way that works with the stitch pattern.
Also, to make it even easier for you to do the decreases at the crown I paid my tech editor to do a crochet chart for you to use. You’re welcome 🙂
Plus, I decided to add some buttons just for fun.

Notes
- Directions are for size written for multiple sizes with the smallest size outside the parentheses and the larger sizes within. I recommend finding the size you want to make then highlighting the numbers that pertain to that size throughout the pattern. 6-12 months (12-24 months, Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large)
- Cuff of hat is crocheted flat back and forth.
- Stitches are worked into the side of the completed cuff to work the body of the hat.
- The body of the hat is in rounds joined with a slip stitch.
- Just as an FYI…most adult hats are typically made in Adult Medium size. The Adult Large is REALLY LARGE and should only be made for people with a REALLY LARGE head.
- The sample was made in size medium.

Pattern
Cuff of Free Crochet Hat Pattern When We Were Young by Marly Bird
Chain 11 sts
Row 1: Single Crochet (sc) in 2nd chain from hook and in each chain to end, ch 1, turn — 10 sc.
Row 2: Sc in the back loop only (blo) in each sc to end, ch 1, turn — 10 sc blo.
Repeat row 2 until the cuff measures approximately the size below slightly stretched.
Side Note: if you make the cuff the exact measurement of the head it will fall down so it is necessary to make it a little (let me stress little) snug to make it fit best. Yes, this means that when you have to make stitches for the body of the hat you will have more stitches than you have rows but it all works out nicely.
6-12 months (12-24 months, Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large)
Circumference 18.5 (19.5, 21.5, 22.5, 23.5, 24.5) inches
Joining Row: Ch 1, turn, fold piece in half, lining up sts of foundation ch and last row, working through both layers, slip st across to join the foundation row and the blo of the last row. This will join the ends to form a loop or the cuff of your hat. Ribbing is 2.5” wide.

Round 1: *Sc in the sc, dc in next sc; rep from * around to last st; join with a slip stitch to first sc, ch 2 (does NOT count as a stitch) — 60 (64, 68, 72, 76, 80) sts.

Crown of Free Crochet Hat Pattern When We Were Young
This section of the crochet hat has a chart to go along with it (I put the chart below the written instructions). If you are familiar with crochet charts, I highly recommend taking a look at it to better understand the crown shaping.
If you are not familiar with crochet charts, this would be a good time to compare the written instructions with the chart below to learn how to read charts. They are GREAT for the visual learner as you get to see what the stitch is that is worked into each stitch of the hat.
By the way, I do have a video showing how to read crochet charts. Take a look at it here:
Place markers in the following stitches:
