FIRST FALL WEEKENDER PATTERN — Lesson Two
EDGING ON BASE
With color B held double and the RS facing, join with a slip stitch to the first stitch of row 1 into the free loop.
Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, *2 sc in first stitch, 28 sc across short edge of base to last stitch of row [30 sts total]; rotate base 90 degrees and working stitches along the long edge rows of the base, 2 sc in first row, 1 sc in each row to last row [60 sts total]; rotate base 90 degrees and work stitches along the short edge rows of base; repeat from * once, join with a slip stitch to first sc, ch 1, turn — 180 sc around base.
Round 2 (WS): Hdc in first stitch and in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch to first hdc — 180 hdc.
Fasten off.
BODY OF BAG
The base of the bag is now edged with the correct number of stitches needed for the body of the bag to continue with the chart for the body.
With RS facing, place a marker on each corner of the base and be sure to have 31 sts on each short edge of base between markers, and 59 sts along each long edge of base between markers.
The body of the bag is made in turned rounds to match the look of the base of the bag.
To save on yarn usage and for easiest yarn management, make yarn butterflies >> click for video help << with colors when working in isolated sections of color [ex: in the corners or for a motif]. It will make it easier to manage the colors [see images below].
Using the tapestry colorwork technique, work the body of the bag following the chart for the body through round 17.
Notes for Body of Bag Chart:
- Chart begins at corner marked stitch of short edge of base.
- Work each row of the chart twice for one full round.
- Each round of the body of the bag is worked in half double crochets.
- Each round ends by joining with a slip stitch to the first hdc, ch 1 and turn to begin the next round.
- Personal Note — don’t over think any of this, you want to have the corners to have 3 sts in color B.
Round 1 (RS): With color B, join yarn with a slip stitch at the marked corner stitch of a short edge of the base, ch 1, continue in hdc following the color changes around first row of chart across 90 sts, repeat row 1 of chart for next 90 sts, join with a slip stitch to first hdc, ch 1, turn.
Next Round: Continue in hdc following the color changes around the bag following the next row of the chart [work row of chart 2 times total], join with a slip stitch to first hdc, ch 1, turn.
Repeat last round through round 17 of chart.
Do not fasten off.
