The Free Crochet Better Together Puff Stitch Hat is a simple crochet hat pattern that combines two brands of yarn into one awesome hat! ❤️Red Heart Unforgettable and Caron Simply Soft Party yarns were used in this traditional crochet puff stitch pattern to make a must have accessory.

This crochet puff stitch hat is a great hat for beginner crocheters and intermediate crocheters both. It uses basic stitches and construction to form a nice hat.

MATERIALS

Yarn: Caron Simply Soft Party: Royal Sparkle (color A) – 1 skein; Red Heart Unforgettable: Stained Glass (color B) – 1 skein

Hook: J/10 (6mm)  adjust hook size to maintain gauge

Notions 

  • Bent Tip Yarn needle

MEASUREMENTS

Gauge: 6 puff stitches x 7.5 rounds = 4”

Finished Size: Circumference: 21.5”; Height: 8” + band = 9.5”

ABBREVIATIONS

A and B = color A and color B; ch= chain; dc= double crochet; sc= single crochet; sk= skip; sp= space; st(s)=stitch(es); * to * = work directions from * to * the number of times specified or to a specific stitch.

SPECIAL STITCHES

⭐️Starting Puff: Ch 2, extend the loop on hook to be the same height as ch 2, [Yo, insert hook, Yo, pull up a loop] three times, yo, pull through 7 loops on hook — puff stitch made. 

⭐️Puff: [Yo, insert hook, Yo, pull up a loop] three times, yo, pull through 7 loops on hook — puff stitch made. 

⭐️Starting Puff-dec: Ch 2, extend the loop on hook to be the same height as ch 2, [Yo, insert hook, Yo, pull up a loop] three times in stitch indicated,  [Yo, insert hook, Yo, pull up a loop] three times in next stitch, yo, pull through 13 loops on hook — puff-decrease made.

NOTE

  • Band is worked flat then joined together.
  • Hat Body is made in the round by working stitches along the side of the Band. 
  • Change color in last pull through of slip stitch on previous round.
  • Do not cut yarn at color changes, float yarn up the inside of hat.
  • It is easy to get a larger gauge as you make the puff stitches so be diligent to keep the stitches the same size.

PATTERN

BAND

With color A

Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across, turn — 5 sc.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc-blo in each sc across, turn. 

Repeat row 1 until piece measures 20” slightly stretched. Do not fasten off.

Match up the WS of the bands together and working through the front loop of the stitches and the free loop from the foundation ch, join with a slip stitch. 

Working along the edge of the band, ch 1, evenly space 64 sc around the band, join to first sc with a slip stitch.

BODY

Round 1: Starting Puff (see special stitches), ch 1, skip 1 sc, *Puff (see special stitches), ch 1, skip 1 sc; repeat from * around, join with a slip stitch to starting puff, then slip stitch into next ch-1 space and change to color B — 32 Puff stitches.

Round 2: Starting Puff in same stitch as slip stitch, ch 1, *Puff in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with a slip stitch to starting puff, then slip stitch into next ch-1 space and change to color A. 

Round 3: Starting Puff in same stitch as slip stitch, ch 1, *Puff in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with a slip stitch to starting puff, then slip stitch into next ch-1 space and change to color B. 

Repeat rounds 2 and 3 four times more. 

Note: This hat can easily be made to be slouchy by adding more rounds before beginning the crown.

CROWN

Round 1: Starting Puff in same stitch as slip stitch, ch 1, *Puff-dec (see special stitches) over next two ch-1 sps, puff in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around to last ch-1 sp, puff in next ch-1 sp, join with a slip stitch to starting puff, then slip stitch into next ch-1 space and change to color A — 21 Puff stitches rem.

Round 2:  Starting Puff in same stitch as slip stitch, ch 1, *Puff-dec over next two ch-1 sps, puff in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around to last 2 ch-1 sps, Puff-dec over last 2 ch-1 sps, join with a slip stitch to starting puff, then slip stitch into next ch-1 space and change to color B — 14 puff sts rem. 

Round 3: Starting Puff-dec in same stitch as slip stitch, ch 1, *Puff-dec over next two ch-1 sps; repeat from * around, join with a slip stitch to starting puff, then slip stitch into next ch-1 space and change to color A — 7 puff sts rem. 

Round 4: Starting Puff in same stitch as slip stitch, ch 1, *Puff-dec over next two ch-1 sps; repeat from * around, join with a slip stitch to starting puff, then slip stitch into next ch-1 space and fasten off leaving a 10” tail — 4 puff sts rem. 

Use tail to sew the top of the hat closed. 

Weave in all tails to inside of hat.
