We recently shared a helpful chart of the most common knit and crochet blanket sizes. When it comes to baby blankets, many people aim to make 40″ x 40″ blankets. This is a great size for pretty much any baby, making it perfect for gifting. If you’re going to design your own baby blanket, you can make it 40″ long, stitch it in whatever design you prefer, and then keep knitting or crocheting until you’ve got a square. Wonderful! However, if you’re looking for a pattern, then this easy 40″ square crochet baby blanket is a great place to start.

Seed Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket
The Cuddles Baby Blanket is a 40″ crochet baby blanket pattern that I designed using the crochet seed stitch. This is a very easy stitch that a beginner can learn quickly. It alternates two basic crochet stitches across the row. The result is a beautiful texture that babies will love to grab with their little fingers. It’s dense so their fingers aren’t likely to slip through and get stuck. That’s one of the reasons I love it for baby blankets.
Worsted Weight Yarn for Baby Blanket
I originally designed this crochet blanket to use Plymouth Yarn Encore yarn. This is a worsted weight yarn, which is the most common yarn weight people use for crochet. It makes a lot of sense to use the most common yarn weight for the most common baby blanket size, doesn’t it? Moreover, it’s an easy yarn weight to work with and it makes for a very comfortable blanket.
Plymouth Yarn Encore is a blend of 75% acrylic and 25% wool. Some people worry about using wool fiber for babies. However, blended with so much acrylic, it’s soft and not itchy. This wool blend yarn is designed so that you can machine wash it and also dry it in the machine. People with babies love this convenience or obvious reasons.
Alternative Yarn Options
Here are some similar worsted weight yarns that you might want to check out for making this blanket:
- Heatherly Worsted: This is a really beautiful soft yarn that’s 80% acrylic, 20% merino wool and you can machine wash and dry it
- Mighty Stitch Worsted: This one is 80% acrylic, 20% superwash wool – which means that you can wash it and dry it in the machine
- Bernat Premium Yarn: This is 100% acrylic yarn that you can wash and dry in the machine
- Red Heart Comfort Yarn: This is also 100% soft acrylic yarn that is machine wash and dry
- Red Heart Soft Baby Steps: This is another 100$ acrylic yarn designed specifically for babies
Have Fun Playing With Colors
This 40″ square crochet baby blanket pattern is designed with blue-green yarn that changes colors as you crochet. However, don’t hesitate to have fun with the colors you choose when making this blanket. Make it in a single solid color, in stripes, with color blocking, in a variegated yarn. It’s a stitch and size that works well with any color array you have in mind.
