Crochet Beach Cover-Up: Shore Thing Dress

Rohn Strong has created the perfect addition to your beach wardrobe with the Shore Thing Crochet Beach Dress. You work this crochet beach cover-up with It’s A Wrap from Red Heart, and it’s a FREE pattern. It might be a weight #1 yarn, but that’s nothing to be afraid of. Work through the two-part video tutorial, and you’ll have each section mastered to make your own crochet beach cover-up.

Crochet Beach Cover-Up:

Before starting on this pattern, please know that it may take you a little longer than patterns using worsted weight yarn. This crochet beach cover-up is worked with a superfine weight yarn and a small hook. Although it may take you a little longer to finish, the final results will be worth all of the effort!

Worked in two rectangles and sewn together, this pattern is one that you can easily take with you. You crochet the start and end of each triangle on the bias to give a great sectioned look.

Inside the pattern, you’ll find a chart for each dress section. This allows you to move along the pattern with not only the written instructions but also a chart and video tutorial. If you’ve never used charts before, it’s a great time to start. Learn how to read crochet charts with my video tutorial.

Not only is this dress perfect for a beach cover-up, but you could also add a liner, and for a perfect summertime dress.

Video Notes:

  • I am making a smaller version of the crochet beach cover-up for the tutorial to show you how to work the technique but not make the entire dress.
  • This video tutorial is broken into two parts. The video was quite long, so I split it into two parts so you could stop working on the main body in the middle.
  • Rohn designed this pattern using a superfine weight yarn. Be sure to budget more time for this project vs. one worked with worsted weight.
  • Find both written and charted instructions in this pattern.

It’s a Wrap!

Use It’s a Wrap by Red Heart. This is a super fine (weight #1) yarn that is a cotton acrylic blend.

Red Heart introduced It’s a Wrap yarn during the rise of the cake yarn craze. They didn’t jump on the bandwagon with this one but rather filled a void. Most of the cake yarns available were all of a thicker weight. This was the first superfine weight cake yarn you could find in the mainstream crafting world.

It's A Wrap super fine cotton and acrylic yarn from Red Heart showing 7 different colorways.

Each skein/cake of It’s A Wrap comes with a generous amount of yarn, 1,100 yards to be exact. This makes it ideal for shawls and wraps. With SEVEN different color choices, I’m sure you’ll find something that fits with the project that you love.
