Dual Cable Knit Hat Pattern

I’ve already shared an updated post with you about my dual cable knit fingerless gloves. In that, I mentioned that this is just one pattern of a three-pattern set. Of course, I want to make sure you can create the whole set if you want to. The matching designs give you a pulled-together look when you wear them all together. And yet, each pattern also stands on its own. So, if you want to make the set, or if you’re just looking for a great cable knit hat pattern, here’s the second pattern in that grouping.

Dual Cable Knit Hat Pattern

Just like with the fingerless gloves, I’ve used a Fair Isle cable technique to create the eye-catching portion of this hat design. I chose two complementary colors to braid together for a really powerful design. The two colors intertwine as they cable over one another. It creates visual intrigue for the eye. Moreover, it hints at a lot of organic designs that pull at us subconsciously in a positive way. Think of opposites joining together in one creation.

Thick Cable Knit Hat Brim

In this dual cable knit hat pattern, the cables make up the brim of the hat. I’ve chosen to create a very wide, thick brim for this design in order to really showcase this key feature of the pattern. In order to balance out the dramatic brim, the body of the hat has a very simple knit design. It all come together in the crown of the hat, which is simple, but carefully thought-out, to create a totally balanced design.

A Hat Knit Flat

There are so many different ways to knit a hat. Oftentimes, I enjoy knitting seamless designs in the round. However, for this cable knit hat pattern, flat row-based knitting makes a lot more sense. Therefore, you’ll knit this design in rows, then you’ll take that flat piece you’ve created it and seam it together to make the hat. This hat is designed with both written instructions and charts to make working on it easy for you.

A Hat That Stands The Test Of Time

I designed the dual cable knit hat and matching scarf and gloves patterns over a decade ago. And yet, they stand the test of time. The neutral colors and beautiful cabling are sophisticated, stylish choices that continue to work in modern wardrobes year after year. These are the kind of accessories you can pair with a dress for a night out. However, you can also wear them with jeans and a sweater to create a more polished casual look.

The only thing that hasn’t stood the test of time is the yarn selection. Unfortunately, Bijou Basin Ranch, the original source of the yarn, has since closed down. Therefore, you’ll have to find a good luxury yarn to substitute for this pattern. As mentioned in my post for the dual cable fingerless gloves, you might start by checking out Expression Fiber Arts 50/50 yak merino blend and Etsy’s Bluewater Yarns yak yarn blends.
