Tournament of Stitches 2021 Crochet Section 1

Welcome to Tournament of Stitches 2021! This is the first section of the crochet version of this stitch-along.

This is a makealong. You must complete each previous part of the project before you can move on to the next part. You can always visit the original blog post to get all of the details that you need. Plus, that’s where you can find the links to each new section of the crochet-along as well as each week’s knit-along version of the pattern.

Remember, should you have any questions please be sure to post in dedicated thread for Tournament of Stitches Week 1 in the Marly’s Minions Facebook Group!

MEASUREMENTS

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: You have two options for this project:

  • Pillow is 19” (48.5 cm) wide by 18” (45.5 cm) tall
  • Afghan is 60“ (152 cm)  wide by 57“  (145 cm) high

GAUGE: 15 sc x 15 rows = 4.75” [12 cm] x 4.5” [11.4 cm] Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

MATERIALS

Yarn: Sample was made with WeCrochet/Knit Picks Brava (100% Premium Acrylic, 100g, 218 yds

Color A: 400 grams

Color B: 400 grams

Color C: 400 grams

Color D: 400 grams

Color E: 600 grams

It is possible to choose any worsted weight yarn that gets gauge. Keep scrolling for a list of suggested yarns.

**I’ve added a pillow size option below 🙂 **

Color Suggestions: I would choose colors that are not too close together in shade but have all of the colors work together. You could go subtle or loud. Totally your choice.

Hooks:  Size I/9 (5.5 mm) or size needed to obtain correct gauge.

Notions: Chenille or Tapestry needle, Stitch markers, 18 x18 Pillow form or size to fit your pillow

SPECIAL STITCHES

Sc2tog Join: Insert hook in last st of row, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into row end on adjoining block, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through all three loops on hook.

VIDEO

NOTES

  1. Change color when there are 2 loops left on the hook of previous color.
  2. Carry yarn on the wrong side of the work.  Meaning when you switch your colors mid row, make sure to move your working yarn to the wrong side.  If you are crocheting the right side, move yarn to the back.  If you are crocheting the wrong side, move yarn to the front.
  3. If you are struggling with a two color chain, you can use the first color to make your chain, then start using the two colors. Also, video does demonstrate how to manage two color chain.
  4. If you are struggling with the join as you go method, simply make each square individually and seam them together.
