About the Easy Split Crochet Tote

Working the Easy Split Crochet Tote is easy when you follow along with my video tutorial. Find the video below. In this pattern, you’ll work three separate pieces: the body and the two straps. The body of the bag is made in a spiral shape. Therefore, you’ll need a stitch marker to denote the start of a new row. The pattern is written to have the stitches worked in rounds rather than turning your project and working in rows, which would then require seaming.

Scrubby Smoothie Yarn has been Discontinued BUT

Scrubby Smoothie was the yarn of choice for the Easy Split Crochet Tote. It’s not like some other cotton yarns on the market; it’s not scratchy and stiff. Yes, this was designed to make dishcloths, but it’s great for other projects. Scrubby Smoothie is very similar to the wonderful yarn from WeCrochet called Dishie. I highly recommend this yarn as a substitute for Smoothie.

Changing Colors for Crochet Easy Split Tote

In this video, I show you how to change colors in the round at the end of a round when working in a spiral. This can seem a little tricky as you continue to work in the round. However, it really isn’t. Just take it slow.

Gauge Matters

Although this is a bag pattern, and many might think that gauge isn’t important, it really is for this pattern. Try practicing the stitch pattern before getting started. The nature of this stitch pattern could cause you to pull your stitches tighter than normal. Check this before getting started so you can adjust your hook size. This ensures you get the right finished size. It also avoids making the bag a nightmare by trying to get your hook through too-tight stitches.

Gauge is also important for this project because you’ll work into both sides of the starting chain. If you aren’t sure what I mean by that, check out the video tutorial below to learn how to work into both sides of your starting chain.

Knit-Like Crochet Stitch

The split single crochet stitch lets you get the look of knitting through your crochet. Watch where you put your hook for each stitch to get the correct look. That’s why you’ll need the video below if you’re unfamiliar with the stitch.

Crochet is so wonderful that it has you place your hook in different places for different looks. But be sure you put your hook in the right spot, or you won’t get the same look as the photo. It’s also important to watch where you put your stitches with each yarn color when working with color.
