Special Crochet Stitches & Techniques

  • Modified Bean Stitch: Yo, insert hook into st indicated, yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook into same stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, insert hook into NEXT stitch, yo pull up a loop, yo, pull through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1. — two stitches have been used to make the stitch thus decreasing the total number of stitches.

Measurements: The diameter of the opening of the piece after Rnd 22 is approx. 7″. C = pi * d calculates the circumference (distance around the outside of the circle). D in the formula refers to the diameter which is the width of the circle. Therefore, the circumference = 3.14 * 7 = 21.98″

–Designer Note: When you make these stitches on Rnd 20, really try to keep the tension snug. Don’t let your stitch stretch out too much (you know, when the top V of the stitch looks super stretched from one stitch to the next) or you will not actually decrease the size of the piece.

Just another reminder that the gauge is 5 hdc per inch! (updated 2.6.19)

Rnd 20: Working through both loops, * modified bean stitch [see special stitches], skip 1 hdc, repeat from * around — 40 modified bean stitches

Rnd 21: Working through both loops, * hdc in the modified bean stitch, hdc in ch-1 space; repeat from*around — 80 hdc

Rnd 22: Working into the 3rd loop only, *sc in three hdc, skip 1 hdc; repeat from * around to last stitch, slip stitch in last stitch of round, and in first stitch of next round.

— Designer Note: if you find that the hat (yes, it is a hat) is still a little too large after Rnd 22, you have a couple options that I’ve listed out below:

  • Rip out rnd 22 and instead of skipping every 4th stitch, skip every other stitch then every 4th stitch. For example: Working into the 3rd loop only, *sc in 1 hdc, skip 1 hdc, sc in 3 hdc, skip 1 hdc; repeat from * around to last stitch, slip stitch in last stitch of round, and in first stitch of next round.
  • Second option is to keep rnd 22 as is, and add the round elastic cord around the opening. But you will do this after all the finishing is complete after the 5pm hour.

Fasten off.

Cut yarn leaving a 6” tail. Weave in ends.
