2 Knit Lit Chicks Podcast with Barb and Tracie

2 Knit Lit Chicks Podcast with Barb and Tracie joined us for PODCASTER NOVEMBER on Yarn Thing with Marly Bird. 2 Knit Lit Chicks is a mother/daughter podcast that shares their love of knitting (sometimes crocheting) and books, namely A LOT of modern literature.

Tracie says they have shared hobbies and books since she was a little girl. Barb can’t remember being taught to knit but a few years ago, she thought it would be nice to have something to do while watching football, went down to the store and came home with fun fur! (Who has not done that?) She was happy with knitting scarves and shared her love with her daughter Tracie. This has happened with other things, like scrap booking and needlepoint. Tracie was resistant to knitting at first because she knew she would be obsessive about it as with everything, but finally Barb brought her a Learn to Knit kit from KnitPicks and, she was right, it became another hobby they shared.

When Tracie had been knitting about a 18 months or so, Barb then introduced Tracie to podcasts. At some point they were discussing podcasts that they had listened to, and it was thrown out there that ‘Hey, we should have a knitting and True Crime books podcasts!’ When Barb suggested to her knit group, they thought it would be a great idea. Barb continue to explore the idea and share what she found with Tracie and then finally said, ‘I think we should do a podcast together’ and Tracie realized Barb would do this only if she participated. And Thus 2 Knit Lit Chicks Podcast was begun.

(Barb shared that she teaches knitting to a cancer support group, in the middle of this story, and she starts them with dishcloths, rather than scarves and hats…)

Barb and Tracie live about an hour and a half from each other, they find it works best for them to get together to record. They do record and then one of them will download and one will work on the show notes, recording about twice a month, and they switch so that the other does the show notes, etc. That way no one person is always doing the same thing, although when they began, Barb did the downloading and editing. They do use Skype when either one of them is traveling and sharing their knitting adventures with the podcast partner and audience. They share what they are working on, Barb and Tracie do a lot of knitting for the Mother Bear project and made a respectable showing in the Halos of Hope Podcaster throwdown last year.

They are both PROLIFIC readers (not an exaggeration) and share what they are reading either in book form or listening in Audible. They don’t consider themselves reviewers, but rather share a synopsis or description and what the personally thought of it. The same happens with patterns, and they get responses from people that agree or disagree. Some listen just for the books. They personally love true crime books, but they will read a lot of other things just because it’s popular and listeners will ask what they thought of them.  They are both on Goodreads.com which has been likened to social media for books.

Tracie thinks the most popular segment at the end where the ‘give vent’ to things that bug them. There have been many who listen because they miss the relationship with their parent in their own lives. There is a wonderful and active Ravelry group also!

Speaking of family secrets, how about some info on the “smutty” book titles, eh? I might get crocheting too fast though! Thanks for the podcast, very interesting today!

  2. Nancy says:

Family secrets was the code word. Hopefully i am putting this comment in the correct spot for the free book from 2 knit lit chicks. I laughed when i heard the title something about men I loved. I have loved a man that is dead..just divorced a gay man. My nephew says I am the queen of crazy love and definitely a fag hag …I love him to death!.
I have listened to the 2 knit lit chicks for a while but this week I stumbled unto Marly Bird and I love both podcasts .

  3. Mary Prassinos says:

As far as I know I don’t have any family secrets. But not sure. I loved today’s episode. I am librarian and love hearing about the books that the Knit Lit Chicks like. I have never listened to them before but definitely will subscribe and listen from now on. I have only been knitting for about two years but am addicted to it. And YES they need to read Outlander

  5. Anita says:

Family secrets are so much fun to read about. I’ve just added another podcast to my listening queue. It was a fun interview. Thanks.

  6. Vicki Lynch says:

What an entertaining podcast-books and knitting-it doesn’t get much better! I suppose all families have secrets- growing up in a large family, our secrets were usually covering for the one who had snagged the cookies or some other treat that had been baked for something special the next day.

  7. River says:

What fun! So glad I found your podcast today! Please hook us up with some good paranormal titles, Marly. Don’t keep them a family secret. – River

  8. Celeste says:

I do listen to the 2 Knit Lit Chicks podcast, but so far they haven’t revealed any of their own family secrets. 🙂

  9. Shelly says:

Family secrets…are the best part of most books. I loved this discussion of books and podcasts. This was a wonderful way to spend some time while crocheting. Thanks ladies.

  11. Susie Moten says:

Although the only family secrets I enjoy finding out are those of my own family, I love the 2 Knit Lit Chicks and their podcast!

  12. Mary Pat says:

A nice change ladies, especially when it comes to family secrets, which we all have in our closets! Happy Thanksgiving to all.!

  13. Melissa says:

Thank you so much for sharing some family secrets! I loved hearing about some of your favorite books…I commit to trying Outlander (maybe on Audible…).

  14. Marylee Clamon says:

I am really enjoying listening to many of my favorite podcasters on the show. The knit lit chicks have been a favorite of mine for a long time. I do also love the book discussions and thumbs up and down. Maybe a new show part could be family secrets.

  15. Suzanne says:

I really enjoyed hearing you try to persuade Barb and Tracie to read the Outlander series. Marly, you have a gift of gab and I bet you could get them to divulge some of their family secrets. Did you know that they blame Chad for lots of things?
