Symbol Charts for Free Crochet Granny Square Stocking Pattern

Many people work better with symbol charts than they do with words alone. That’s why I include them with my patterns, including my free crochet patterns. Here are the two symbol charts for the granny squares and the toe circle described above.

Seaming the Granny Square Stocking

Following the layout show below, join squares together with a single crochet seam (see special technique section for instructions) vertically, then horizontally. Seam back of leg together with same single crochet seam. Fold project in half (refer to layout) and single crochet seam together.

Once leg is seamed, add one square on each side of center column to create foot. (Refer to layout square is show in blue). Each new square is single crochet seamed to half the square in the center column and the other half to each other. Add toe circle last with single crochet seam.

Finish with Cuff Ribbing

In order to complete this crochet granny square stocking pattern, you just need another six rounds to create  the ribbed cuff edging.

Rnd 1: With RS facing, join color A with a sl st at the back of the stocking, ch 1, single crochet evenly around the top (must have even number), join with a sl st to first sc, do not turn.

Rnds 2-4: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), *fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st; rep from * around, join with a sl st to first fpdc, do not turn.

Rnd 5: Rep Rnd 2 to last st, ch 7, join with a sl st to first fpdc. Turn.

Last Row: 12 sc in ch-7 sp; sl st in next st. Fasten off.

Options: Create a tassel and attach to the front of the stocking.
