Summer Adventures with Yarn

School is coming to an end, pools are starting to open, trips to the beach are starting, campers are getting packed up. All of these are signs of summer. Many of us put down our hooks and needles this time of year for some travel, relaxation and family time. Your needles and hooks might be slower but we can still have summer adventures with our yarn and Marly!

Okay, yes knitting and crochet is a great source of relaxation but let’s be honest, when it is 100 degrees outside the last thing I want to do is pick up a big project and hold it on my lap. Grab your small summer projects, your camera and some silliness and join me in traveling with Flat Marly.

What is Flat Marly:

Some of you may be wondering what I am talking about, flat Marly. If you haven’t heard of it before there is a children’s book titled “Flat Stanley” where there is a little boy who has survived being crushed (flattened) by a bulletin board. Once he is flat he makes the best of it by getting into a lot of situations that normal 3D people can’t.

One of the advantages in his story is that he can be mailed to his friends in California because he is now flat, talk about saving on airfare! Over the years many schools have adopted flat Stanley and have been mailing him around and documenting his new adventures.

Although I get to meet some of you in person in different classes there are many that I haven’t met. I thought that it would be super fun to adapt the story for us to have a little fun. Typically kids mail their Stanley to friends and family that live or are traveling to other locations. Rather than mailing me around I thought that you could all take me with you and I would still reach as many places.

Summer Yarn Adventures with Flat Marly:

You may be wondering how this is going to work. First you will need to get the Flat Mary image (learn more about that below) and then start taking photos! It is easy as that.

There doesn’t need to be yarn in your photos but we would really love it if there were! What should be in your photos, check the list below. Looking for some inspiration? Check out the photos from last year’s event.

Include in your photo:

  • You, a family member or friend
  • The flat Marly Image
  • Yarn, finished project, WIP, or tool (if possible)

How Do I get a Flat Marly:

This year we are doing things a little different. Last year we made a Flat Marly image for all of you to use. We wanted to let you have a say in which Marly would be traveling around with you this year so we put it to a vote. Thanks to everyone who participated.
