One Ball Knit Hat

Beginner Knit Hat one ball knit hat project

As with most of the knit patterns I design, I started with the long tail cast on method. Learning how to start this way is easy with the two tutorials I put together. Why do I love this method so much? I believe it gives me a sturdy start and it also lets me see the ridges better on my first row.

Looking at the finished hat you might think that it is quite complicated. Really, the chevron pattern that you see is all done by changing the placement of your knits and purls. With no shaping in this hat it really is a beginner knit hat. Working in the round does make it a little more advanced than true beginner but follow along in the tutorial below and learn how to join in the round with my tips and tricks.

Throughout this pattern you will need to keep track of your rounds so that you know when to change the placement of stitches. Want an easier way to keep track of your rows while you work? Make one of these DIY knit row counts. They are perfect to make sure that you count each row that you work and you won’t loose your counter because it is attached to your project.

Adding pom poms to the finished hat is a great way to pull it all together. For this pattern I made my own yarn pom poms to make sure that they would be small enough for the hat. You can make your own pom poms using my video tutorial.

Grab your favorite color of Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™ for the pattern. Selecting from the 24 beautiful colors might be the hardest part of this pattern. Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™ is a 100% Merino Wool meaning is much softer than normal wool. This yarn has been treated so that it can be machine washed, making it a great alternative to keep you warm through the cold weather.
