Patty Lyons, Knitwear Designer and Teacher

Patty Lyons, Knitwear designer and teacher joined us live from under a blanket, watching the nor’easter storm outside the window, to chat with Marly Bird on the Yarn Thing Podcast today.

PattyLyons

Patty has been a guest on Yarn Thing before and we love having her back every time. Taught by Grandma when she was a kid, dropped it till she was a Broadway Stage Manager and took it up again with various actors and crew during slow stuff. She didn’t realize she was a designer for a long time after she was just ‘making stuff up’. Also she spent a long time working in a yarn store and for a yarn company, where she gained an incredible skill of interpreting what EVERY different knitter’s EVERY different technique so that she could help them when they have issues or get into trouble!

Currently she spends time teaching, working with Interweave on webinars (Secrets of Yarn Substitution and Blocking Techniques in Knitting) as well as three brand new video classes coming soon, Craftsy classes (Improve your Knitting and Explorations in Cables) and with Annie’s Classes.

There are some episodes of Knitting Daily TV coming up early in 2015 that she has filmed so check local listings for when those air, they begin January 15th.

Patty has a wonderful website where you can subscribe to her newsletter. You’ll also find information about UPCOMING CLASSES such as VKLive and Stitches Expos (she was just at Camp STITCHES in New Mexico), there’s information about the Caribbean Cruise with Melissa Leapman and Laura Nelkin, December 2015, which is very reasonably priced.

Check out her designs listed in Ravelry including a few that are available for purchase.

She will also have an advice column in Creative Knitting called Patty’s Pearls of Wisdom. No links available for that at this time, and I’m hoping it’s spelled PURLS….

IF you missed hearing this great visit the episode is archived where it aired live https://www.blogtalkradio.com/yarnthing/2014/12/09/patty-lyons-knitwear-designer-and-teacher or in iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/patty-lyons-knitwear-designer/id313541727?i=327089616&mt=2

Today we had a Nor’easter, thankfully just deluges of rain and no snow here in Rhode Island. Just got in and had to shake the water off myself like a wet dog. Enjoyed the interview with Patty. She is a fabulous Craftsy instructor!

Loved the entertaining interview with Patty, who sounds like lots of fun. It’s not wet here now, but a storm is brewing for Thursday and Friday. I’m certain I’ll have a wet cat. Since I don’t own a dog, I don’t think I’ll see a wet dog.

I think wet wool smells a lot like wet dog :-). It was my first thought the first time I blocked a wool item 🙂

Patty’s classes make me as happy as a wet dog playing in the rain! Great interview. Patty is a wonderful talent. Love her sense of humor.

Lovely interview. I always love hearing about designers on the show. Oh and there is nothing that smells worse than a wet dog

Thank you Marly and Patty. I love Patty’s energy. She is funny and smart and I certainly hope she won’t be encountering any wet dogs this holiday season.

Great podcast as usual, I usually listen live but wasn’t able to yesterday. We are expecting a huge storm here tomorrow, will be wet and rainy and perfect for knitting…too bad I have to work!

I am so excited to hear about the Knitting Cruise. I already texted by daughter with the details.
Talking about a wet dog brings up memories of some awful smells. Get out the shampoo.

Another great podcast with Patty Lyons – is there anything she can’t do?? I wish she’d help me figure out how to use wet dog in a sentence! Thanks Marly and Patty for another great hour of podcasting!

We had some snow here this morning and I felt so sad for the wet dog I saw across the street. But I got sidetracked…I loved the podcast with Patti.

A wet dog is always grateful for a warm fireplace. Love your classes Patty and Marly!

I had some of my dog’s hair spun into yarn and used it to knit a picture of my dog in a sweater for myself. I was warned not to get stuck in the rain with it or I’d smell like a wet dog! Love your podcast.

There’s nothing like that wet dog smell that permeates a room when your dogs come in to a nice warm room after a walk in the rain.
    Loved the interview.

Marly, it was a pleasure to listen to you and Patty tonight.

I was out in the nor’easter we had the other day and felt like a wet dog when I got back in the house.

I really enjoyed the podcast and getting to know Patty. I listen to the podcasts during my commute to and from work. It was pouring down rain Tuesday, but I managed to make it home without getting drenched like a wet dog. Can’t wait to download Patty’s Interweave webinars and am really looking forward to her new advice column.

A very interesting podcast. I learned a lot and have ordered the DVD from Annie’s as I need help with circular knitting. I however don’t have to smell a wet dog while ordering. I’m thankful that is not an issue for me right now. 🙂

    Fascinating podcast!

I’ve always wondered if people who spin dog hair ever get rid of the wet dog smell?

Happy as a wet dog sitting on a brand-new rug in front of the fireplace – that’s how I felt listening to the podcast. I’m new, and really enjoying getting to know you all.

Hi, Marly! So enjoyed the podcast with Patty! I don’t know how she finds time to do all that she does! Unfortunately, we don’t have our dog anymore, and we miss him so much — wet dog or dry! Pets are amazing, aren’t they? Thank you for such great podcasts, Marly!

I’m in Oakland where we had those heavy rains last week and are still getting more! It’s one of those times I’m grateful for not having a dog: wet dog smell is the worst!

Thanks for sharing your story on the show!
