Making your Knit and Crochet Gifts List:

Let me start off by saying that I am not telling you to demand gifts from anyone! I know that I am asked for gift ideas and so I started making a list of things that I find so that I always have something on hand. The list that I am sharing with you today are big ticket items that you may want to put on your list now so that you can start saving for it in the future.

As with most things the items that I have selected are in my opinion great wish list items. Feel free to do your own research and find the brand that fits your needs. The category of item is what I feel is most important, these are just some of my top brands that I enjoy.

Last year we had a stocking stuffer list made up of smaller or less expensive items. For this knit and crochet gifts list we are talking about bigger items. Be sure to keep an eye out later this year for a new list of stocking stuffers.

Crochet Hooks and Knitting Needles:

Furls Alpha Series Hook

Crochet hooks and knitting needles are the necessity of the craft. Most of us start out with the big box store options. As we learn more about our craft and work longer at it, it would be a nice treat to have beautiful tools.

Not too long ago I did a video and blog posts about how to select your crochet hooks. We are working on a similar review of knitting needles now. There are different factors that go in to picking the right hook or needle for you and your current project.

One of the hooks that is often talked about is the Furls crochet hook. These are hand made wood crochet hooks. They are made to be ergonomical to keep your hands from tiring out. If you haven’t heard about these hooks be sure to listen to the podcast episode that I did with Harrison, the owner of Furls.

Project Bags:

Furls Leather Project Bag

Project bags are another staple for all knitters and crocheters. Yes, you can be resourceful and use grocery bags or other items but when you are working on a special project you will want to have something special to keep it in.

When I am using Chic Sheep by Marly Bird™ I always want to make sure that I take care of the yarn. Although it is a reasonably priced yarn I want to make sure that it stays safe and clean in all of the places I take my project. Project bags are what protects it.

My FAVORITE project bags are my Erin Lane bags. They are perfect for projects of all sizes. If you are looking for an all purpose bag that is designed like a purse you should take a look at the Furls Leather Project Bag.

Although made of leather they are not overly heavy and come with many pockets inside for all of your hooks and notions. The only downfall to this bag is there is no zippered pocket. For some that might not be a problem but for others it could be a consideration. The Furls Leather Project Bag is a nice size that you can carry all of your essentials and your project as well. It holds a large project, like a sweater or blanket.

Blocking Supplies:

Knit IQ Blocking Mats

Blocking, the other word people fear after swatching! Blocking is a misunderstood process in my opinion. When you are using acrylic blocking is not as important in the traditional terms but it is still important to wash and dry your piece as you would to see how the fabric will hold up.

Part of blocking is the tools that you use. Rust-resistant pins are a MUST for blocking. I started using the Knitters Pride Knit Blockers and they make the job of sticking all of the pins so much easier. The Knit Blockers were part of our stocking stuffer list last year.

Another essential to blocking is blocking mats. Personally I like blocking mats that you can put together in a variety of formations. This allows you to block anything from a blanket to shawl to sweater and get the shape that you need. If you can find blocking mats with grids that is even better. I recently found the Knit IQ blocking mats which do have the grids. I must confess that I haven’t personally used these mats but have a set similar that are no longer being produced.

Craft Lighting:

Ultimate 3-in-1 Craft Lamp by Ott Light

While taking care of our hands and wrists is important and having the right tools for this is key we also need to take care of our eyes. In order to make sure that we aren’t straining to see the stitches or figure out where our hooks and needles need to go, a good craft light can be helpful.

I LOVE every Ott Light that I have. From floor lights, to desk lamps to travel lamps they really have it all. You can purchase these lamps online or at your big box craft stores (HINT: You can use a coupon on them and they do go on sale sometimes).

Recently I started to use the Ultimate 3-in-1 Craft lamp and it really hits all of my needs to keep my area well lit. I love the overhead lamp that gives me wide coverage and the small light with the magnifying glass. I even use this sometimes when taking photos! The clip on the lamp is perfect for holding my pattern as well while I work.

I really like that I can take it from a desk lamp or floor lamp and add the attachment and clip it onto most surfaces. This even allows me to take it outside and work at night while enjoying the nice weather. Check out all of the Ott Light options and find the one that fits your knit and crochet location the best.

Knitting Machine:

addi-Express Knitting Machine

Of all the things on this list a knitting machine is not a necessity. The reason that I have this on my list is because it makes donating to charities so much easier. Many of you make hats and scarves for many different charities. Using a knitting machine will make it easier for you to make more of these to donate each year.

One of my favorite knitting machines is the addi-Express Professional Knitting Machine. This is a great size for keeping the machine out or even moving it back and forth. Be sure to check out some of their videos to see the machine in action.

I don’t have any particular favorite crochet hook as I just got a generic set on Amazon to get me through my projects. I would love a custom crochet hook as my hands do get kind of tired when working on a big project

  2. Debbie Z says:

As a beginning crocheter, I do not have much experience with the better brand hooks. I’d like to try a custom hook to see how it makes a difference in my work. Good luck everyone!

  3. Christina says:

Right now I have regular metal hooks that have a rubber sleeve handle over them. I’ve been looking into some wood hooks because I have wood knitting needles that I love! New hooks are definitely on my wishlist!

  4. deb rowley says:

I have a furtls hook made of tulipwood that my son gave me for Mother’s Day. It’s my faorite because it’s so beautiful and has a wonderful feel.

  5. Connie D. says:

I have a few Clover’s that are comfortable to grip but I wish they were a tad big longer. My most favorite would be Boye with the ergonomic cushion as they are longer. Wish I could combine the length of the one with the lightweight of the other.

  6. Rachel Friendship says:

I haven’t gotten any super special ones but I do keep looking. Right now though the only ones I use are the soft grip ones. I can crochet a long time without hand cramping, which is what everyone wants, right? lol

  7. Gina says:

Right now I use crochet hooks with a wooden handle to help with my arthritis . These look like they would be very nice to use.

  8. Dawn Hinnenkamp says:

I have considered getting a furls hook but I am so small that I buy most things in children’s sizes. A friend bought the furls purple and loves them, but too heavy for me and too long. I bought an off brand of the candy shop style and love it, but prefer the wood over plastic any time I can find them. I would love to win one of the wood Furls hooks!

  9. freda says:

Today there are many choices but when I first started to crochet I didn’t know but one. My little local 5 and dime country store was my only choice. I was just a kid without money so I made my own and dreamed.

  10. Vicki gischia says:

My favorite crochet hook is one my Grandma used to teach me how to crochet doilies when I was 6 years old. It is metal and well loved.

  11. Sarah says:

    A set of Brittney hooks
    Chi sheep yarn
A cube shelve to store my yarns
    Pom pom maker.
    Stitch marker
    Alpacas yarn to try.

  12. Serena Lee says:

I just learned to crochet…. the only hooks I’ve used are Wal-Mart cheapies. I’m excited to try new things!

  13. Morgan Schrodt says:

My current favorite hook would have to be my Furls Streamline G/4.0mm in rosewood! It’s the only Furls hook I currently have and I have been using it a lot lately!!

  14. Carolyn says:

My favorite crochet hook is one I inherited from my grandmother. It is not that special of a hook on it’s own but where it came from makes it special.
