Gauge Is Important

Gauge is the measure of how many stitches and rows you get per inch (typically measured over 4 inches) when working a pattern. Why is gauge important? Gauge is important because it tells you if your finished piece will be the same size as the designers sample.

When reading a pattern the gauge swatch tells you how the designer worked their stitches. You want to match that as best you can so that your finished piece will match theirs. If your gauge is larger you will have a bigger item and may run out of yarn. If your gauge is smaller your item will be smaller and might not fit the way that you thought.

How do you change gauge? Try changing the hook size that you are using. Going up or down just one hook size might make the difference. If you decide to use a different yarn than what is called for in the pattern you may need to change your yarn if you are unable to get gauge.

Be sure to swatch before you start with a hat pattern to be sure that it is the right size when you finish.

Heat Wave Yarn

Heat Wave is a revolutionary yarn that is activated by sunlight, even on a cloudy day, to keep you up to 12°F warmer. Upgrade your outdoor gear and stay warm at sporting events, everyday outside activities or even walking your dog. Made in the USA, Heat Wave features a range of 13 solids.

You won’t notice the difference while working with this yarn but when using it out in the cold weather you will feel the difference. Designed to retain heat while being worn outside, the yarn does go back to room temperature when it is no longer exposed to the UV rays.

YOU WILL NOT BURN YOURSELF WITH THIS YARN. The yarn does not get hot enough for you to burn yourself. Check out this video of the yarn in action during a demo at Creativation this year.
