Social Knitter Shawl

The Social Knitter Shawl was a popular pattern from the Tournament of Stitches in 2018. This is perfect to use for a free prayer shawl knitting pattern or one to take along to your Thursday night knitting group.

Social Knitter Shawl Pattern - Marly Bird

Who is a “Social” Knitter–This is a knitter who might be working on the project at a knit club, watching TV or talking with family and friends while working. This pattern is made up of stitches and repeats that are easy to remember. Because of the easy knit pattern it doesn’t require carrying the pattern with you.

SPECIAL STITCHES

⭐️ Stockinette Stitch (flat): RS: Knit. WS: Purl

⭐️ Garter Stitch (flat): RS: Knit. WS: Knit

⭐️ Slip 1, K1, PSSO: sl 1 stitch, K1, pass slip stitch over the stitch just knit (1 stitch decreased)

⭐️ Knit 2 Together (k2tog): insert right hand needle into the first two stitches on the left hand needle at the same time as if to knit, now proceed as if to knit like normal. (1 stitch decreased)

⭐️ Yarn Over (YO): move the working yarn from the back of the right hand needle to the front between the needles then over top the right hand needle back to the back. This will look like an extra loop on your right hand needle and that is what you want. If the next stitch you need to do is a knit, go ahead and knit, if the next stitch you need to do is a purl, you will need to bring the yarn to the front again between the needles before purling.

Note from Marly: It is really hard to add variety to a “social knitting” project when I keep the pattern to only knits and purls. I thought changing it up with some simple shaping would be good. However, I know that this section is a little more complex than a typical “social knitting” section but I feel very strongly that this particular stitch pattern will look great against the previous 2 sections for this concentration level.  I hope you will agree.
