SPECIAL STITCHES
3 Half Double Crochet Cluster (3 hdc-cl): *Yarn over, insert hook around post of st just made, yarn over and pull up a loop; repeat from * 3 times total around same st, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook

SMOOTH JAZZ COWL PLAY 5 PATTERN
Row 1: (RS) Join yarn with sl st to corner of Play 1 on long edge, ch 3 (counts as dc), evenly place 70 dc along long edge, turn- 71 dc.
Row 2: Stacked dc in first dc, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in next 2 dc, *fp3dc-cl around post of next dc, sc in next 5 dc; repeat from * across to last 3 dc, fp3dc-cl around post of next dc, sc in last 2 dc, turn.
Row 4: Stacked dc in first dc, dc in each st across, turn.
Row 5: Ch 1, sc in next 5 dc, *fp3dc-cl around post of next dc, sc in next 5 dc; repeat from * across, turn
Rows 6-13: Repeat Rows 2-5 twice
Row 14: Repeat Row 2, fasten off.

FINISHING
Blocking
Pin the cowl to the schematic size, spray with water and allow to dry.
Seaming
Using schematic as a guide, whip stitch Play 5 to Play 4 edge with tapestry needle.
Edging
Join yarn to RS edge of cowl, ch 1, sc in a multiple of 3 around cowl, sl st to first sc.
If not doing the optional edging, fasten off and weave in ends.
Optional Edging
Round 1 (RS): Do not turn, stacked dc in same st as join, *dc in next sc, 3 hdc-cl around post of dc just made**, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc; repeat from * around ending at **, sl st to first st, do not turn.
Round 2: Stacked dc in first st, *dc in next dc, 3 hdc-cl around post of dc just made**, skip next st, dc in next dc; repeat from * around ending at **, sl st to first st, do not turn.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first dc, sc in next dc, *ch 3, skip next st, sc in next 2 dc; repeat from * around, ch 3, sl st to first sc, fasten off, weave in ends.
Repeat edging on opposite edge.
