Finished Measurements

Cowl is 46.5” [118 cm] wide by 12.75” [32.5 cm] tall not including the edging.

Gauge 

20 dc by 11 rows = 4” [10 cm] x 4” [10 cm]

20 dc in Play 5 stitch pattern = 4” [10 cm]; use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

WeCrochet Comfy Fingering Weight (75% Pima Cotton/ 25% Acrylic, 218 yds / 200 m, 1.75 oz/ 50 g, CYCA# 1 sock/ super fine): #24826 Marlin, 5 balls

Hook

Size E/4 (3.5 mm)

SPECIAL STITCHES 

Front Loop: Horizontal bar that is closest to you. 

Stacked Double Crochet (Stacked Dc): (Do not ch 1 prior to making the first sc) Sc in first stitch, insert hook in between two legs of the base, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook.

BE QUIET I’M COUNTING COWL PLAY 5 PATTERN

Row 1: (RS) Join yarn with sl st to corner of Play 3 on row end edge, ch 3 (counts as dc), evenly place 70 dc along long edge, turn- 71 dc. 

Row 2: Stacked dc in first st, dc in next st, dc in front loop of next 2 sts, *dc in next 4 sts, dc in front loop of next 4 sts; repeat from * across to last 3 sts, dc in last 3 sts, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first dc, skip next 2 sts 1 row below, *tr in front loop in next 2 sts 1 row below (in loop not worked from previous row), skip sts behind tr just made, sc in next 4 dc**, tr in front loop in next 2 sts 1 row below (in next loops not used from previous row), skip sts behind tr just made, skip next 4 sts 1 row below, ; repeat from * across ending at **, turn.

Row 4: Stacked dc in first st, dc in next 3 sts, *dc in front loop of next 4 sts, dc in next 4 sts; repeat from * across to last 3 sts, dc in front loop of next 2 sts, dc in last st, turn. 

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first dc, sc in next 2 dc, tr in front loop in next 2 sts 1 row below (in next loops not used from previous row), skip sts behind tr just made, *skip next 4 sts 1 row below, tr in front loop in next 2 sts 1 row below (in loop not worked from previous row), skip sts behind tr just made, sc in next 4 dc, tr in front loop in next 2 sts 1 row below (in next loops not used from previous row), skip sts behind tr just made; repeat from * across to last 2 dc, sc in last 2 dc, turn.

Rows 6-13: Repeat Rows 2-5

Row 14: Stacked dc in first dc, dc in each st across, fasten off.

FINISHING

Blocking

Pin the cowl to the schematic size, spray with water and allow to dry. 

Seaming

Using schematic as a guide, whip stitch Play 5 to Play 4 edge with tapestry needle. 

Edging

Join yarn to RS edge of cowl, ch 1, sc in a multiple of 4 around cowl, sl st to first sc.

If not doing the optional edging, fasten off and weave in ends.

Optional Edging

Round 1 (RS): Do not turn, ch 5 (counts as tr + ch-1 sp), tr in same st as join, *skip 3 sc, ([tr, ch 1] twice, tr) in next sc; repeat from * around, tr in same st as join, ch 1, sl st to 4th ch of beginning ch, do not turn. 

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp (space made from beginning ch), *sc between next 2 tr, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3**, sc in next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around ending at **, sl st to first sc, fasten off, weave in ends. 

Repeat edging on opposite edge.
