Working with Motifs:

Many times when people are getting started with crochet they will learn with the granny square. The granny square is a simple motif that is a worked in rounds making a square as you work with only double crochet and chain stitches. Once you have mastered the granny square you can move on to more complex crochet motifs and color changes.

Really there are endless possibilities with what motifs you can make and what you can do with them. After finishing your motifs you can put them together into a blanket, a scarf, a bag, a shawl, the list goes on and on. Not only are you not limited to what you can make as a finished item, you are also not limited to the shapes that you can create either.

One of the ‘scary’ parts about working with motifs is the number of ends that you will have to weave in. Yes, the more colors and the more motifs that you have there will be more ends. You will find a few different ways of joining your motifs together. One is the join as you go method which does cut down on the amount of weaving you have to do at the end. An abundance of ends is just one of the byproducts of working with motifs, just as with corner-to-corner. Although you will have ends to weave in the finished projects are just stunning.

About Crochet Blocks:

In this book you will find a collection of 60 motifs and 15 projects. To start off the book you will find a photo gallery of all the motifs in the book. They are numbered so that you can easily find the motif pattern in the book. Each motif comes with a chart so that you can follow the written instructions or the charted instructs or a combination of both. Making motifs allows you to play around with color. You don’t have to use color in projects, you can still get an amazing finished piece by using one color motifs.

I use motifs for all kinds of projects. I have also used motifs as coasters, decorations for the front of a card, putting two together to make a pocket and there are many other things that you can do with just one or two motifs. Think about taking some of the beautiful motifs in this book and making wall hangings. Use the motifs in the book to play around with color. Maybe you won’t make a whole project in your color pallet but you will have fun picking new things. A great thing to use motifs for is to use up your yarn scraps. Mix and match the colors and motifs in this book to create you own designs. The way that you combine your motifs and the border that you use will take your project to the next level and make it your own.

I would like to learn to make things other than blankets with motifs. This book sounds helpful. Thanks

  2. Wendy S Senter says:

I learned to crochet making granny squares when I was about 7 or 8. I made many of them but I don’t think they ever ended up in a single project–possibly because they were many different gauges! I currently have a Triple S Shawl (knit) on the needles that I quite like but got set aside for a bit. I think it’s time to pick it up and finish it!

  3. Vicki gischia says:

The first motif I made was in the first thing I ever crocheted – the center of a doily! My grandma taught me the motif first, then we crocheted around it to make the doily!❤️

  4. Joan says:

The motif I tried was a dream catcher square. I’d love to give motifs a try with this awesome looking book.

  5. Christina says:

I haven’t made a motif project yet! I’ve been on the look out for one!! The most time consuming project I’ve made is a C2C rocket blanket I designed for my son!

  6. Marylou says:

The only thing I have ever made was a pillow cover out of two large granny squares. I’d love to get a little more creative!

  7. Dee says:

I’ve been working on hexie motif project for a while. I bring it with me all the time and work on motifs when I’m waiting st appointments or to pick up someone. It’ll get done eventually and can’t wait to see how it looks!

  8. Peggy P says:

I love working with Granny Squares. I like the idea of playing with different patterns and colors and branching out from Afghanis.

  9. Leanne says:

I made the square dance blanket from Bernat. Soon, I’ll be making one of the Heidi Bears animals.
