Classic Elite Yarns: Betsy Perry

Betsy PerrySpecial Guest Betsy Perry from Classic Elite Yarns joins Marly on the podcast to talk about the new book Classic Elite Shawls, Wraps & Scarves. Betsy has been knitting since childhood and is surrounded by family that is equally crafty! Before working with CEY, Betsy was in IT and various other companies. She has brought her experience and knowledge to CEY for the last ten years. She loves the yarn world, the people, the passion and the creativity found there!

CEY is 14 dedicated yarnies who do all they can to promote the industry, help retailers, and provide inspiration and beautiful products to knitters and crocheters. CEY is known for its wonderful array of natural fiber yarns, and for its amazing range of color in all its yarn qualities. They also produce over 100 patterns each year plus 50 free patterns available through the weekly web-letter. You can sign up for the newsletter here!

Taking one design concept and producing 3 patterns was an idea that originated with a small booklet CEY produced in 2010.  Together with Soho Publishing and sixth&spring, Classic Elite Shawls, Wraps & Scarves was produced.  Betsy explains that CEY loved working with editor Trisha Malcolm and her staff in sourcing the projects. Seventeen designers came up with creative ways to expand a single design idea. This resulted in over 60 patterns in the book, giving people a chance to experiment with stitches, shapes, and yarns. There is a wide variety in this book and while difficult to pick a favorite, Betsy did note that she wears a design by Angela Tong most often!

Ready for a giveaway? You will win a copy of the book and yarn! Please leave a comment on these shownotes – and don’t forget the keyword! A winner will be chosen in two to three weeks.

Great podcast! I love the idea of using the same pattern to get three completely different looks. I often have to use my own creativity to adjust a pattern in order to use the yarns I have on hand or risk the stash taking over my bedroom. I can do this pretty easily in crochet, but I’m a beginning knitter and can’t judge as easily how something might look in a lace weight vs. a DK when knitted. Having a whole book of examples (and as suggested projects to test a stitch pattern on) would be wonderful.

Really an interesting idea to take novel design pattern and creativity recreate them in a variety of yarn weights and accessories. Making the easy to learn to the more challenging is one great point but I’d imagine that it would be wicked hot to have sets of couture accessories, in mixing weight yarn. I can see that this will be great for gifting to friends for the too soon to be here Holidays.

I have knit and crocheted projects with several Classic Elite Yarns, and have enjoyed all of them so far! As creativity apparently skipped my generation (my grandmother, mother, and daughter are all very creative), I rely heavily on patterns for my knitting and crochet adventures, so always happy to see a wonderful new pattern book out there!

I just looked at the book on Amazon since they have the look in the book feature. The creativity of the patterns in the different yarn weights is pretty interesting. I’m hoping the library has a copy on order. As always Marly, another great interview!

This concept is great! I do this by myself using different stitches in stitch dictionaries with all types and weights of yarns; my creativity would bloom with a book showing all of the differences with the same pattern! Thanks for a good show 🙂

Oh my! I wouldn’t have guessed that CEY was actually a small company. That’s a lot of creativity highly concentrated into one company! They have a very nice subscription e-newsletter which shows how prolific they are with their design offerings, as well as their yarn. I’m pleased they decided to produce a book to gather their ideas into one place!

How interesting to get a little insight into the inner workings at CEY. Whenever I visit Hub Mills Store, CEY’s local company store, located in the same building as the offices, I always wondered what kind of creativity was happening on the other side of the wall. How lucky they are to have jobs that they love!

    Marly,
This is the first podcast of yours I have listened to! Great interview and it really did get my creative juices flowing! After the holidays my creativity levels are always low and starting a large project is not up my alley right now. However, the new book from Classic Elite sounds perfect. I already love getting their e-mails with their pattern and Yarn!

Betsy caught my attention and has stirred the creativity in my mind to branch out into different yarn weights and see how the project can change by using these different weights.
